Literary Accomplishments:
Apart from the articles and feature programmes I wrote before the war in Somalia, I have produced five books of which three are written in English and two in Somali. I made two films and a documentary on War and Women in Somalia.
I. Books
1. ANATOMY OF A FAILURE (Causes and Consequences of the Somalia Tragedy). This book examines the Somali crisis in detail, including the implications of the Somali social structure, the rise and fall of Siad Barre, the War with Ethiopia and many other events of desirable historical and political interest. It also emphasizes five failures this country witnessed over the past 40 years, and they are: Failure of the civilian governments established in Somalia during the sixties, the collapse of the military regime, failure of the armed factions to replace the deposed military authority, Reconciliation Conferences which all ended in Failure and the International Mission, the UN –Led military intervention which also failed to reach its objectives. Published in Nairobi in 1999
2. Somalia: Recovery In Transition
This books covers wide-range of issues in the social and economic recovery amid dismantled public institutions and widespread chaos and civil strife all across the country. Though signs to re-build the nation with a central authority has then not been in place, the general public took the initiative to establish functional business machinery which obviously absorbed large number of dangerous militia who were a great menace to peace. Published in Nairobi in 2003.
3. Survival:
This book is written in Somali. Its story is now a film. It is a novel that is set against the hazards and insecurity of the Somali civil war, the challenges Somalis are facing to eke their living and the coping mechanisms they have built over the years of political darkness in Somalia. A lady called Asli is the main character of the book. She has witnessed the horrors of losing children in the war. Her husband had been hit and maimed by a shrapnel of strayed rocket.
When the multinational forces came in 1992 Asli found a placement at the US Embassy Compound where the Task Forces used as a HQ. With the meager income she generated from her job, Asli had breathed life into the whole family who were about to perish as a result of hunger. But when the forces clashed with Somali militia, situation has changed, much to the chagrin of Asli. Forces were evacuated and that had left her jobless. Then she left for Saudi Arabia only to be deported to Somnalia and more horrible than this was the shocking discovery of seeing her husband sharing bed with another woman whom he had married while she was away in S. Arabia. What did Asli do? The book will tell more.
4. Of War and Love, later developed into a film in 1999 and renamed as (Qadka Cagaaran, The Green Line -- without my consent). It has been distributed around the world but mostly viewed by Somnali communities in the diaspora.
It is a love story between Waris and Warsame whose wedding ceremony coincided with the very day shooting started in Mogadishu. Each one fled to a different direction as they belonged to different tribes. Each one was told that the other died and each one started to search the grave of the other.
“Two graves in search of each other”. Have the lovers finally met and in what situation ? Have they met each other physically or it was only their graves that were finally put side by side, like Juliet and Romeo?
5. A Cargo of Guilt:
This is a work of fiction. It is a love story between teenagers who are too restless and unstable to take the right decisions at the right time. Cargo of Guilt takes you to the landscape of youthful ambitions and romantic fantasies. It is full of intrigue, deception and betrayal but extraordinarily inspiring. In this story, you will find how Haroon, a young school boy who claims to be a man of high births by belonging to a noble tribe called (Gobta) falls in love with Safi.
Safi belonged to a culturally outcast tribe called Midgaan who are not married by those who call themselves Gobta. After discovering her tribe, Haroon dropped the girl on grounds that the two bloods can not mix. But Safi couldn’t understand why invisible walls of clan complex is built between two hearts that love each other very much.
Strangely enough, Safi is no different from other girls in the school and yet she suffered terrible abuse to the extent that her boyfriend quit his relations with her just because she is a Midgaan girl. Su’aad who had some feelings for Haroon worked out of the break up in a hectic investigation to track down Safi’s true clan origins.
Unfortunately the split came at a time when Safi was pregnant. Carrying a baby rejected by its father long before it was born, Safi had to face the odd situation in which fate had put her. A model for decent personality, integrity and courage, Safi won the game after two decades of struggle with life. This book was published by authorhouse in Indian, USA and is available in all American major bookstores.
