CAROL DENISE MITCHELL was born and raised in Watts, California during the noteworthy era of the Civil Rights Movement, and is the sixth of sixteen children born to Zebbie and Tasceaie Charles.

My  initial influence was my maternal grandmother. Mamus, (Mom-us) as she was called by family members), died in 1965 at age 49 of bone cancer. Her short life is broadened in my book, "What Happened to Suzy." Mamus was Irish Catholic and Black. She was a warm-hearted woman who taught me a lot about my mixed heritage. She is the one person who told me my name was not "Suzy" but is Carol Denise. She specifically pinpointed to my large family how people are really all the same, specifically when I asked her why some of our family tree was white and Indian. She taught me how to love people literally for who and what they are. Little did I know then, how long her advice to a nine year old would take me onward through the bumpy roads of life. I shall never forget my grandmother and her grand influences in my life.

BACKGROUND

Other major influences in my life include: Barack Obama, The Kennedys, Sidney Poitier, Huey Newton, Malcolm X and everyday people who take risk to help others. I am particularly fond of individuals like Barack, (win or lose)  that have actively participated in making major contributions to the overall coming together of the people as a whole. This includes Oprah Winfrey, who I admire more each year and Maya Angelou. With recognition that Oprah has all she needs in life materially, Oprah is determined to share her wealth with individuals here and abroad that can greatly benefit by her enormous benevolence, like the Angel Network. Oprah's friend Maya Angelou's work inspired me enough to write "What Happened to Suzy".

THE ARTS

I love original works like, "Gone With the Wind" and "Peyton Place".  Lana Turner, Betty Davis, Susan Hayward, Hallie Berry, Dorothy Dandrige, Katherine and Audrey Hepburn and Joan Crawford are my favorite actresses. My God, I forgot Vivien Leigh! Favorite actors are Jim Kelly, Leslie Howard, and Richard Roundtree. My favorite writers include Phylis Wheatley, Richard Wright, Edgar Allen Poe,  Dorothy Raymond, Claude Brown, K'wan and John Steinbeck.  Seeing such artistry from writing on the screen had a lot to do with my inspiration to be a writer too. Grace Metalious is the inspiration for my poem: "Writer be a Writer." Before Metalious I knew in the seventh grade I wanted to be a writer when I wrote a poem about the stars up in the sky. The writing journey has been a long bumpy road...But, it has been indeed - well worth the overall effort.

PUBLISHED WORKS

I wrote "What Happened to Suzy." 0-8062-5013-5, (1994) Carlton Press; soon to be re-released in a second printing. (It's the story of my upbringing) that people maintain a lifelong desire to read. Re-issuing "Suzy" has become mandatory as it has now become a collector's item selling from $99 and up! I am truly honored.

I wrote "A Love Worth Fighting for" ISBN: 1-4033-7073-7, Authorhouse, (2002).

I wrote "Your Rights, What Employers Do Not Want you to Know,"   ISBN: 0-9786258-0-3 CDM3Publisher.com, (2005).

Rovella Starr is Carol's best work! The award-winning writer grew up in a post war era knowing first-hand of injustices within her poverty-ridden community. Expression via writing became a vehicle for her to highlight such problems and to write about topics that would be illuminative to her community.

With her keen ability to address difficult subject matters head-on to helping others, it is only fitting that Ms. Mitchell has devoted her precious writing time in developing informative gems like, “What Happened to Suzy.”
From honoring the American worker, in ‘Your Rights,’ to ‘Suzy’ Ms. Mitchell is a writer to be reckoned with.
