In 1936, our town was celebrating its Centennial. I was one of the elementary students who would march in the parade carrying a small American flag (with 48 stars). We were marshalled next to an old man in a classic open touring car who was celebrating his centennial. He leaned over the side of the car and said "when I was a boy like you I seen a old man in a buggy in the Independence Day Parade who claimed he was in the American Revolution."
