All this is history now and probably irrelevant because the world has changed so much since the days of my Police career. However, for those who might be remotely interested in what makes me tick, I am a former New Zealand Police Sergeant and Inspector in The Australian Protective Service, a division of the Federal Police tasked with providing counter terrorist response and diplomatic and consular protection.
Having experienced the New Zealand Police's transition from its days of a macho, bullying disparate group of individuals in the 1960’s to a highly trained, professional body in which I was proud to serve, I resigned to go "walk about" back in Australia, the land of my birth.
The truth was, I was burnt out, highly stressed and my family was under threat from the local bikie gang whose activities I had been tasked with controlling. I was prepared take anything they might want to dish out but I was not prepared to put my family at risk, so I chose the only way out I knew. In other words, they won! Lawless gangs are now rife throughout New Zealand (and Australia).
As a former member of the N.Z. Police Search and Rescue, Diving, Armed Offenders and elite Team Policing Squads, I have many enthralling anecdotes in my repertoire of police life and feel well qualified to write about the human condition as I have seen humanity at its best (and worst) and like many police officers, have witnessed horrific tragedies, disasters and brutality.
Although an APS career was very rewarding it was at the same time heartbreaking. Nepotism, dishonesty and mismanagement were rife in the fledgling Service's formative years. Although I had the satisfaction of accomplishing much, the Service's lack of resolve to deal with disciplinary problems led to my decision to resign for a position as the first security manager for Western Australia’s parliament house. There, I completed a major security review, established the Parliament's first security team and formulated a comprehensive management plan and because the big egos and power hungry characters had no intention of implementing anything, I dropped it on the desk of the President of the Legislative Council and resigned before they used me as a scapegoat should anything go wrong. And it did in a monumental fashion a few short years later, biting those same egos on their fat shiny backsides. Boy would I love to write about that!
Civvy street proved a battle for survival but at least I was the master of my own destiny during the running of several businesses with varying degrees of success. Among these was a career as a self-employed Investigator which was just too much like police work.
I've authored various in-house manuals and publications covering matters predominantly related to security, although in my spare time I've studied the writer’s craft and composed bush ballads.
I'm a proud grandfather of nine, who is immensely concern for the planet’s future and the world my innocent and beautiful grandchildren will inherit from a greedy, hedonistic and consumer mad world which by and large cares little for our ailing and fragile planet.
Before I leave this world I want to feel I've done everything I can to aid in the fight against what I call, "the planetary cancer of consumerism." (Others call it global warming).
