Arts journalist, opinion columnist and jazz guitarist whose first novel, High C at the Sunset Terrace, has just been published.

Background Information

I have been a devotee of music generally since about age three. My main orientation for the past several decades has been the strain of American music that brought us jazz, jump blues, doo-wop, and soul music. Oh, that we could get some genuine groove back in our cultural life! I am also a keen follower of events on the world stage, and feel strongly that freedom is the essential condition for human fulfillment.

Accomplishments

Host - Stirring Something Up (a dining-and-cooking talk show on Saturday mornings on WCSI-AM radio)

Columnist - The (Columbus, IN) Republic

Adjunct Lecturer in blues history and jazz history - Indiana University

Former (1989 - 1991) President - Indiana Council on World Affairs

Additional Information

My novel, High C at the Sunset Terrace, was published by Author House in December 2006. It's set in Indianapolis in 1948, in the jazz clubs along Indiana Avenue. My main characters are fictional, but I bring in such historical figures from that scene as J.J. Johnson, Wes Montgomery an Jimmy Coe. It was a magic world of neon lights, barber-shop gossip, shady club owners and booking agents, the aroma of barbecue, and strong community bonds, church choirs, loyal mentors and widom-infused humor. Some of the greatest giants of 20th-century music came out of that milieu.
