Blondie L. Clayton’s first goal in life was to just grow up, to be able to protect herself from adults who molest children. From elementary through high school she proved to be a focused student.She was the first African American twirler and the first female science award holder at the predominately white Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn, New York (64-67).

With no direction, and pressure from a pregnant friend, Blondie, at 18, bought the lie that once you finished high school there was nothing else to do but get married and have a family and ended up pregnant and married right after high school.

After marriage, while waiting to deliver her son James, she began speed writing and typing drills in the comfort of her living room. As a result, she successfully acquired a position as secretary and worked her way into a leadership position as an Administrative Assistant to the Vice President of Operations, managing over 18 municipal hospitals in the City of New York.

Desiring to have a career that allowed her to travel, Blondie studied court reporting at the Stenotype Academy in New York; recognized by administrative staff as the first student ever to master the speed of 125 W.P.M attending a Saturday class.

In 1974, determined to break free of working for others she left New York for Florida. Her big break in her new court reporting career came through a man named Bert Friedman.Despite the subtle prejudices even in the court systems, Blondie never let it deter her desire to break into this field.

Blondie attributes her ability to overcome to her piano teacher who told her: “You can succeed at anything, if you work at it.”

After 15 years in the court reporting business Blondie opened The Blondie Court Reporting Agency in 1981. She was the first African American court reporter to win a county bid to report Zoning Board Hearings.

In 1985 she met and married her third husband Frank Clayton who was diagnosed with a terminal illness in 1990, which started her to question the meaning of life. A journey that led her into a spiritual awakening which dramatically changed her life and from there she began the journey to becoming a writer, a passion that has taken on a life of its own.
