Tooth straightening is a procedure done by dentists to straighten crooked teeth and enhance the beauty of your smile.  Millions of people worldwide have crooked teeth.  Here are just a few reasons why people have crooked teeth are:

  • You’re born with crooked teeth
  • Your teeth become crooked over time due to age – as you get older the makeup of your mouth changes
  • Tooth loss
  • Your teeth shift in your mouth
  • You have a small jaw causing your teeth to grow into one specific area of your mouth causing teeth to usually grow or shift out of place.
  • Sucking you thumb – no thumb sucking folks!
  • Using a pacifier
  • Tooth loss.

Whatever caused your crooked teeth-not to worry teeth straightening can fix your crooked teeth by straightening the alignment of your teeth.  Orthodontists are dentists who main specialty is to straighten teething.  They use a variety of treatment tools and techniques to straighten teeth.  Orthodontists can also use braces to straighten teeth, and fix the alignment of your jaw.

The Benefits of Having Your Teeth Straightened

Crooked teeth can vary in its severity going from mild all the way to extremely severe cases.  Most of the time, patients come into the office to straighten their teeth because they want to improve their smile and enhance their beauty not because it is posing a medical problem.  Many people have admitted that teeth’s straightening has helped improve their self-esteem because by improving their physical appearance they felt better about themselves.

Crooked teeth can also cause problems with eating or speaking this would be a dental problem that you would need to see you dentist immediately for help.

The Tooth Straightening Procedures

Fixed Orthodontic Braces - Fixed orthodontic braces are sets of wires and brackets cemented to your teeth.  A patient who gets fixed orthodontic braces will have to wear the fixed orthodontic braces for about two to three years.  The orthodontist will tighten the wires and adjust on the braces frequently.  The braces work well because they gradually apply force to straighten the teeth.  The orthodontist will be able to determine how long you need to wear them based on how much movement is required in order to obtain straight teeth.  Over the years, the dental surgery community has created numerous styles and with various colored ceramic brackets to choose from – not like when I grew up.

Lingual Braces - Lingual braces are similar to your conventional wire braces.  The only difference is that they are built-in to the back surfaces making them unnoticeable.  Lingual braces are reported to be very painful and you may have a hard time getting use to them.  However, if you conscious of the way you look and you do not want anyone to notice that you are wearing braces than lingual may be the braces for you.  These braces can be worn for severe orthodontic cases:

  • Crowding – your teeth are too close together
  • Overbite – your teeth lie on top of each other too much
  • Your lower teeth stick out
  • Crossbite – your teeth bite on the wrong side of each other

Invisalign These clear orthodontic aligners are removable.  My mother loves them! Yes, my mother!  The orthodontist will adjust them so your teeth will shift into position without having to use any metal or wires.  The patient will have to wear each Invisalign for a period of two weeks.  Each aligner moves the teeth more and more into position.  It can take a couple months to a year and a half.  However, they are some pro’s and /con’s to invisaligns.

The disadvantages - Invisalign does not work well with:

  • Teeth that are at different heights
  • Teeth that are lower than others
  • Teeth that are higher than others
  • Teeth that are severely rotated
  • Correcting bite problems
  • Teeth that are overcrowded

The advantages:

  • You can remove them to clean your teeth
  •  You can remove them to eat.

In the last couple of years, Invisalign has become a very popular with adults.

Inman Aligner - can straighten or move your teeth to the position they need to subside in.  Many dentists use the Inman Aligner as an alternate to the invisalign invisible braces.  It can do a wonderful job on straightening the front of your teeth.  The Inman Aligner has a lingual coil spring that puts pressure on the teeth shifts them into place.  Typically, patients need to wear them for 1 to four months to push the teeth back into place.

Damon Braces - Damon braces have metal brackets bonded to your teeth; a wire is used to straighten your teeth.  Damon braces are used on:

  • Severe cases
  • Underbites
  • Teeth are too close together
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Overbites
  • Teeth bite on the wrong side of each other

6-month smile - The Six Month Smile braces has wires are small and are not as noticeable as conventional braces.  These braces do not have to be worn as long.  The Six Month Smile is comfortable to wear and not uncomfortable as other braces.

The Six Month Smiles can be used to treat a wide variety of orthodontic problems:

  • When teeth are too close together
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Teeth partly cover each other
  • When front teeth stick out
  • Lower teeth stick out
  • When teeth bite on the wrong side of each other
  • When your teeth do not meet when you bite
  • When the upper and lower teeth don't align

Treatments usually take a year and a half to 2 years.

Remember, no matter what procedure you choose to straighten your teeth.  You must always schedule visits to your dentist, brush well, and floss.  Good dental hygiene is important if you want to maintain a great smile.
