Hollywood Stories: Review
By Betty Jo Tucker

Stephen Schochet has created a special treat for movie fans with his entertaining book, Hollywood Stories. Packed to the brim with amusing anecdotes about film icons and movie legends, this book is a must-read for anyone who enjoys discovering revealing information about film folks like John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe, Johnny Depp, Greta Garbo, Jack Nicholson, James Dean, Humphrey Bogart, Judy Garland, Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, Debbie Reynolds, Judy Garland and many, many more.

How does Schochet know so much about Hollywood stars and other movie-related personnel? Well, as a Hollywood tour guide, he began doing research years ago in order to tell colorful tales about Tinseltown to his customers. Fortunately, most of these tales are now included in Hollywood Stories: Short, Entertaining Anecdotes about the Stars and Legends of the Movies!

I’m happy to report that there are lots of surprises in store for readers here. For example, everyone believes Singin’ in the Rain (my all-time favorite film) was a happy musical. But Scochet reveals the brutal truth behind some of those glorious dance numbers. Among other surprises that intrigued me while reading Hollywood Stories are: finding out how real-life pain helped Cher give an Oscar-winning performance in Moonstruck; learning why Errol Flynn didn’t want to do The Adventures of Robin Hood; and discovering how outrageous Lee Marvin’s behind-the-scenes behavior became during the filming of Cat Ballou.

Schochet’s stories cover the Hollywood gamut, as the following sample chapter titles illustrate: Great Hollywood Comedians, Science Fiction and Horror, Oscar Talk, Moguls and Directors, Silents and Talkies, Singers and Dancers, Western Vignettes, Walt Disney Stories, Leading Men and Leading Ladies.

Using a spirited writing style and a splendid sense of timing, Schochet holds the readers interest and knows when to move from one topic to the next. He never bores us. It’s obvious this author loves telling his Hollywood tales. As a practicing movie addict, I say “More power to him!”
