I use the health/wellness analogy in this piece, because, if you don't have your health...you're not going to accomplish much of anything in your life. Good healthcare has always been my top priority in my life. How can a person have a quality of life with out their health?
Ten Commandments of Good Health;
1) Get and maintain your health
2) Keep things simple;
3) A positive, winning attitude;
4) Have an open mind for change for the best;
5) Do what the Boy Scouts do...be prepared;
6) When opportunity comes...you'll be ready;
The formula for winning, can't be prescribed by a
doctor or purchased over-the-counter...and if you think so...you're just another dreamer among the millions of dreamers out there! The ingredients necessary to win, are in each and every one of us...the individual just has to dig down and find it in your soul and use it. A winning attitude starts with an open mind for change for the better.
I also use the golf analogy...I have to play my own game...I can't worry want the golfers are doing on the next fairway or up on the green, etc. I have to focus and concentrate on my own game...and if I can do that...I can come out a winner!
Don't Golf My Way!
It all starts with attitude...a good attitude...OR a bad attitude...an open mind...or a closed mind, etc. The glass is either half full...or it's half empty...YOU decide!
"An optimist sees an opportunity in every calamity, whereas, a pessimist sees a calamity in every opportunity." Winston Churchill
A Winning Attitude: (definition); A positive attitude is the power that drives you to success! Developing and manifesting a positive attitude makes life happier and more successful. A positive attitude helps to cope more easily with the daily affairs of life. It brings optimism into your life, and makes it easier to avoid worry and negative thinking, etc.
Life On the Sunny Side of the Street (positive attitude;
"If you're going to be thinking...you might as well think BIG!" Donald Trump
Confidence: (definition); belief in oneself and in one's power or abilities;
I'm a very competitive person, and I've never like to lose at anything; golf; cards; checkers; ping-pong, etc. If you beat me at anything...you're going to have to beat me...I won't go easy!
Honesty; (definition); truthful or creditable;
If you can't be honest with yourself...who can you be honest with? You're in the best position to watch your nose grow! Living a life in denial and lying to yourself...will put you in the back of the pack for sure. Have a fireside chat with yourself about all your capabilities, weaknesses and limitations...and be honest with yourself.
One of my weaknesses all my life, has been public speaking...you're not going to see me up at the podium making a speech or making a fool of myself anytime soon! I make a fool out of myself everyday...and I don't need the help of a podium to do so!
Realize your shortcomings and limitations...
Chiropractic; Another weakness of mine, is a poor memory...because I have suffered from headaches all my life...and that came about because of an injury to my neck and upper spine when I was kid. To cure the problem, it took over ten years of visits to a chiropractor...and over 125 visits since 1976! I finally won the ballgame...but it took a long time!
Denial; (continued) I'm reminded about that horror that happened on the campus of Virginia Tech University, when that twisted mind, shot and killed 32 people including himself. And, before he committed the act and suicide, he said on his video, "YOU made me do this!" referring that... we as a nation were responsible for his twisted mind and acts! Unfortunetely, there are millions of people out there, who never take responsibility for their actions...this young man was just one of them!
My own mother had this type of attitude...she blamed everyone for her woes...my father...the kids...Social Security...her doctor...she never blamed herself for anything...in denial all her life!
Isn't denial a river in Egypt?
"Never tell people what to do. Tell them what to do, and they will surprise you with their ingenuity." Gen. George S. Patton
Good idea person: I've always considered myself a good and strong idea person. But, I've had some stinkos, too! So, when I built my website, I think it's one of the most creative sites on the Internet. But, because ideas are so subjective...the reader can decide for him or herself...
Writing courses: The reader will determine whether I am a good writer or not. When I was in my 40's, I went back to the books to improve my writing skills, and completed three writing courses; Writer's Digest Course; the National Writers Club course; and a Creative Writing class at the University of New Mexico...at a cost (at the time) of about $200 and about 18 months to complete the courses. When it came time to put up my website...I was ready, and I couldn't wait. Completing the writing courses, gave my the confidence I needed to show my work all over the world. At the end of the Labor Day week-end of 2011, I have 270 articles on hand, and many of them have been featured in the writing site. Additionally, over 100 of my articles have been published on more than 500 websites on
the Internet. Learn more; http://humordoctormd.homestead.com/articlespublished.html

Humor and creativity just seem to go together;
Determination; (definition); fixed purpose or intention toward some objective or end;
When I got my yearly physical exam, I was 40 pounds overweight, and I was appalled! At the time, I knew I was going to lose the weight...it was just a matter of time. How long would it take to lose 40 pounds? I thought it would take me at least a year or more, so I dug in for the long haul. I was determined to lose the weight and I did, but it took time and patience. See the following article;
Here's the Skinny On How I Lost 40 Pounds;
With 271 articles in my collection, this piece occupies occupies the #7 spot.
Taking chances: Writing, I was determined to write an article, with that "no nonsense" tell it like it is approach. I did it in 2006, and posted it for all the world to see. I was worried about it, and I thought about toning it down a bit. I left it up...and today...with more than 270 articles in my portfolio, the article occupies the #23 spot and I've written more than 2 dozen articles in that same approach, etc. The Negative Side of Humor;
Open mind; (definition); a mind receptive to different opinions or ideas;
If there was ever a closed-mind on this planet...it was my father...so I can easily compare what an open mind and a closed mind can do, etc.
"Success comes in cans...not in can'ts." Author unknown
Writing; (continued); I began writing seriously at the end of the year 2006, and since then over 100 of my articles have been published on more than 500 websites on the Internet. The reader can see the list at the following link; (2 pages)
Articles Published Page;
Sacrifice; (definition); the surrender or destruction of something prized or disirable for the sake of something considered having a higher or more pressing claim;
As I said earlier and when I lost 40 pounds in 2001, I had another problem for years. It's one thing to take the weight off...it's another thing to keep it off! The roller-coaster ride between 170 and 180 pounds, which I endured for years afterward. Solution? Humans don't need 3 meals a day to survive, so I quit eating lunch! When I was in the hospital recently, I told the nurse to cancel lunch and she did. My weight has been steady at 170 pounds over the past two years! And, I'm happy about it, and it has taken sacrifice to do it! And, at the age of 66 in 2011, I realize I have one foot in the grave...so I need all the help I can get...
Losing the Weight Is Only the Beginning;
Discipline; (definition); activity, exercise or regimen that develops or improves a skill; training;
I learned all about discipline while in the Air Force for four years. It was the discipline that would allow me to use it to accomplish other positive things in my life like quitting smoking. I quit smoking in 1970, and I haven't touched tobacco since, and is one of the best things I've done for myself, my family, those around me, and my pets, too.
Smoking Sucks! How I Quit Smoking
With 271 articles in my collection, this piece occupies the #14 spot.
Patience; (definition); having or showing the capacity for endurance;
Everyone knows that diabetes is the number 5 killer in the country...and I follow my blood tests, and do what my doctor says, etc. After finger-pricking my finger hundreds of times in 2009, I think the numbers are leveling off, and now I need to keep on doing the same thing, and have patience, and hope the numbers will keep leveling off and start dropping in 2010.
"Never dull your shine for somebody else."
Commitment; (definition); a pledge or a promise; obligation;
Jogging; A commitment is a promise to myself, and I promised myself in 1986, that I would jog 15 miles a week, and in 2009, I have not broken that promise. Doing this for so long, is just like anything else...getting up in the morning and brushing your teeth...etc. It just becomes a way of life...and if you don't do it...there's something missing in your life, etc. Fifteen miles a week for 24 years...translates to over 17,000 miles of jogging...and it was worth every step of it! A feel, good, feeling for sure!
The Many Benefits of Exercise;
Courage; (definition); the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty; danger; pain without fear;
A little used word, but over the years, we've all needed courage in our lives; riding our first bike; going off to the military; getting married; the first day in school; changing jobs, etc.
I think one of the things that needs courage to do, is to take a blood test, and finding out what's wrong with you, if anything. I don't know how people can live with the worry of not knowing. Early detection...and if anything is wrong...the person can deal with it. It's better than not knowing! My last blood test was in February, 2011, and the reader can see the results of the blood test here...
Avocados; Cholesterol; and Heart Disease;
Dental care: Something else that requires courage, is going to the dentist. At the age of 66 in 2011, I have all my teeth (minus three) and I do not want to wear dentures...and because of this I try to take care of my teeth. Over the years, I've had three cavities filled; dental surgery and three teeth pulled. I didn't think any of this was a big deal. NO dentures for me..unless I get into an accident, etc.
Dentures: Take Care of Your Teeth or Else!
With 271 articles in my collection, this piece occupies the #99 spot.
"The best job goes to the person who gets it done without passing the buck or coming back with excuses." Napolean Hill
Temptation; (fighting off/definition); something that tempts; allures; or entises;
Like it or not...we're all going to have to fight off temptation, in one way or another, all the way to the grave, etc. Shopping; football; golf; cards; television; casinos; drugs; drinking; smoking; 'looking over the fence'...writing, etc...etc...etc...etc...etc...etc...etc...etc...etc...etc...etc.
The Dangers of Temptation and Peer-Pressure; With 271 articles in my collection, this piece occupies the #68 spot.
Persevierance; (definition); steady persistence in course of action; a purpose; a state; in spite of difficulties, obstacles or discouragement;
Other than jogging for over 24 years, I think the other thing that would fit into this category is the high-blood pressure problem I've had for over 40 years. I've had to watch my diet, especially salt, and take medication, etc. Because I've had this problem for so long, I never thought I'd reach the age of 55 or 60...or 65...and now I'm older than dirt! (66 in 2011)
The Silent Killer (high-blood pressure);
With 271 articles in my collection, this piece occupies the #47 spot.
Opportunity: People from all over the world, come to America seeking freedom and opportunity. Many people find that opportunity and do something with it, and make their dreams come true. Doing something with opportunity takes a positive attitude and a stong work ethic, etc. Meanwhile, the negative losers are left in the dust, pointing fingers at why their lives are so wrong...it's always somebody else's fault...or so they say!
No Free lunch! If you're an excuse-maker or a whiner...don't bother with this list...nothing anyone does is going to suit you! You're the type that probably knows everything, anyway!
As I said in one of my other articles, I didn't start writing to be a crusader or a preacher for anything. If a person wants to commit suicide one puff at a time...one drink at a time...one pound at a time...one snort at a time...or one heart attack at a time...it's fine with me! Every accomplishment takes time and/or money in doing.
Diabetes; (Patience): I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2008. Because I get a blood test 2 or 3 times a year, I was not surpirsed when I went over the line. Talk about having patience for the next three yearsw. Pricking my finger hundreds of times over the last several months, to get the necessary data for me and my doctor. The numbers have leveled off, and I hope to win this battle, as I have won all the others, but it will take patience, and I hope to be somewhere under the line in 2010. Not only did that happen...but in 2011, my last blood test showed an A1C of 5.9. The time before that, was 6.1 and the time before that was 5.9 and the coment from my doctor, "Excellent diabetes control."
Sleep Deprivation and Diabetes
With 271 articles in my collection, this piece occupies the #8 spot;
As the reader can see...this list has nothing to do with material things such as money; prescriptions; over-the-counter; privilege or anything else. It has everything to do, with the fact, that everyone has the qualities listed on this page. The individual just has to find these qualities from within...AND USE THEM!
"There are no shortcuts to life's greatest achievements." Conrad Hilton
Health/wellness Page; The reader already knows by now, that I place great emphasis on good healthcare to allow me to achieve what I have achieved. Simply stated... I can't do it without my health! So, I've put together a page with all my medical-related articles on one page (including links) for your convenience. There are over 80 articles listed on this page, and many of them...I have some experience in the topic...so you will be getting it straight from the 'horses mouth.'
Good Healthcare; Key To a Quality Life;
(List of 80+ articles/with links)
I Love Me page/wall: I think everyone who succeeds at something...should have an 'I love ME' wall or page on the Internet. After all...you've earned it! You should celebrate yourself...by dancing on sunshine...doing the twist up on Cloud 9...or just doing what you do best...making a fool of yourself! I have an 'I love Me' page...which is entitled...
Toot Your Horn With Dignity and Gratitude;
As I said earlier...there's NO free lunch! Success always comes with a price tag...in time... effort or money...or all three!
I leave you with this thought, which is so true...
"For those who want to succeed, will find a way...and for those who don't...will find an excuse!" Ron Santiago
My Dog Ate My Homework! (excuse-makers)
