4. Psalm 138 He Is Wonderful!
Here is Psalm 138 . Of course this is NOT any of the texts based on the medieval Hebrew versions viewed on the Bible site, but the far more accurate translation printed in my book, Bible Wisdom: PSALMS of Praise & Power newly translated from the Ancient Greek Old Testament.
Lord, you’ve examined me and proved my honest heart.
You know everything I do, from the last to the first:
You understand my thoughts before I even think them.
You trace my paths, whether I’m working or resting,
and you foresee all my actions. Even before I speak,
you already know what I’ll say.
In fact, you are all around me.
On every side, you protect me by your power.
Your knowledge of me is so overwhelming,
it’s too deep for me to understand.
Where could I go to escape from your Spirit?
Where could I get away from your presence?
If I went up to heaven, you would be there.
If I were to go down to the world of the dead,
you would be there also!
If I should spread my wings to fly toward the dawn
and sojourn at the extremity of the sea, I flee in vain,
for even there your hand would lead me and guide me.
Yes, even there your right hand would hold me firm!
I could ask the darkness to cover me,
or even the light to turn into luxurious night;
but even pitch darkness is never dark for you,
and the murkiest midnight is as bright as noon;
for darkness and light are all the same to you!
You created and possessed every part of me.
You have helped me from the moment I appeared
in my mother’s womb. I praise you because you are
so fearfully wonderful – as wonderful as your works!
I know it with all my heart.
You saw my bones being formed,
as you carefully put them together in my mother’s womb,
when I was growing there in secret.
Yes, you saw me before I was born.
The span of my life, the days that had been created for me,
had all been recorded in your book,
before any of them had yet begun.
God, how difficult are your thoughts for me to understand!
And how many of them there are!
If I counted them, they would be more than the grains of sand.
I am now awake, and am still with you.
So examine me, Lord God, and know my heart!
Test me and uncover my thoughts!
Discover if there is any deceit or iniquity in me,
and lead me into the path to your eternity!
