“Love of the wilderness is more than a hunger for what is always beyond reach;
It is also an expression of loyalty to the earth which bore us and sustains us,
The only home we shall ever know, the only paradise we shall ever need,
If only we had the eyes to see.”
Edward Abbey
The Wilderness Society's mission is to protect our nation’s wilderness, and to inspire all Americans to care about our many wondrous wild places. Since its founding in 1935, The Wilderness Society has led the effort to permanently protect as ‘Designated Wilderness’ nearly 110 million acres of American land in 44 states.
I’ve been a member of this organization for many years now, since I’ve always believed that we American citizens should revere and protect our nation’s wondrous wild places, and all the magnificent wild animals residing in them. I also believe that we have an obligation to protect both of them for future generations of Americans to come.
The Wilderness Society has recently devised a little quiz, to discover one’s ‘Wild Side’ and what creature of nature we most relate to. I recently took this eight question quiz, and I wasn’t surprised at all that my quiz responses led me to an affinity with The Moose, a marvelous northwood resident that I have been fascinated with my entire life:
The Moose
“Confident enough to go it alone, but gregarious enough to emerge as the life of the party, those who relate most to the Moose, appreciate all that goes into protecting important habitat. Moose rely on wild forests, meadows, lakes, and streams, and likewise, those with an affinity with the Moose are in their own way the total package. They are lively and humorous, and they know that the secret to a long life is a sense of humor.”
Not surprisingly, my favorite places to wander, explore, fish, camp, and revel in the ancient wonders of nature have always been America’s magnificent northern forests, meadows, lakes, and streams, and I could easily spend my remaining days on our planet rejoicing in the breath-taking splendor of the great northwood.

It truly needs many more ardent advocates these extremely sad, greed-filled days of:
“Short-sighted politicians, who in their greed and selfishness will, if permitted,
Rob our country of half its charm, by their reckless extermination,
Of all useful and beautiful wild things.”
President Theodore Roosevelt
