In what internal organ does true love reside? I began to feel the need to dissect and compare the guts of men to see what makes the rotten ones so awful and the good ones so hard to come by. I could see myself pinning them to paper with little labels, the heart of a liar, a good man's spleen...

Armed only with curiosity, a tape recorder and a list of questions covering love, sex, ,commitment, marriage and family, I set out to interview 1,000 men across the country.

 I stopped at 527 interviews. I had laughed and cried with these men - often in the space of a single interview - as I vicariously experienced their joys and victories, and their dreams and nightmares.
