This poem portrays the inevitable approach of Death, and the
judgment that follows. It's very sobering to know that I once had to fear death and judgment. Jesus freed me from that fear when I trusted in Him to forgive my sin and make me a child of God.
Chilling breeze releases leaf from tenuous grip on life;
As raging illness wracks a body, fevered in its strife.
Once loosened from the succouring branch,
the leaf soon breathes its last;
While frail human, falling still, knows not when life shall pass.
Just one exists who knows the day--the minute--breath shall cease
And trembling carcass sink in death, while spirit finds release.
'Tis God, and God alone, who knows the hour and the way
Each one will step across the bar to face his Judgment Day.
Be ready then, oh, mortal man, to stand before the LORD!
No help you'll find from friend or foe;
no smooth nor stamm'ring word
to build a strong defense for every time you have betrayed,
Or slough the blame on others for each enemy you've made.
Your lies, your petty thieveries, the lust that rules your mind;
All else remains in earthly realms; your Sin stays not behind.
One day, your name will ring abroad, beyond a fresh-dug grave.
Will God reject your yearning soul,
as you lament the choice you made?
The Father scans the open Book ; your name does not appear;
"Too late!" your bitter soul cries out;
"I mocked the truth; I would not hear!"
"But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the children of God, even to them who believe on His Name....." (John 1:12)
"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
He that believeth on Him is not condemned;
but he that believeth not is condemned already,
because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God." (John 3:16 to 18)
