The last fighting Tommy has finally gone
At the age of one hundred and eleven
Harry Patch he was an honourable man
Now he sits with God in Heaven
He stood in the trenches, cold and afraid
Then 'Over the top,' came the call
And Harry went over, rifle in hand
But he said, 'there was fear in us all'
Now Harry shot a German, twice in the leg
As the soldier charged, bayonet in hand
Cause' Harry didn't want to kill this man
Leave him dying, in this desolate land
Old Harry, was a man, of integrity and pride
Who was saddened by the price men paid
'War's organised murder, nothing else'
Were the words that Harry once said
In fact, Harry claimed, he killed no one
He did not have that hate for his foe
But he knew the cost, with thousands lost
Was the price of this horrifying show
So Harry was the last fighting Tommy
And he deserves the last word on war
Harry says, that his comrades who died back then
Did not know what they really died for.
Rest in peace-(GJT)
