Call Your Saddles to Cripple Creek

gunmetal gray
poker chips thirty
of clay

mexican berry
arm garters and
whiskey for starters

wild rag silver dollar
bandanna slide with a bullet
hole souvenir of the preacher who died

call your saddles
to cripple creek the
judas you seek stands pat

hand played they
said pisgah lied but she
never gives up her dead

carved initials black
in the aspen bark dark with
sickness but not miner's fever

they say ladies prayed
now ghosts they're called understanding
deep in the bellies of burros that brayed

if ever should it be
one of them ladies finds that jug
she plant a rose and water it with whiskey

and if that jewel is
ever to be spotted again
because it got out of the hands of a fool

put it in a brooch of gold
and wear it heavy on the heart
the story's been told

century wise and owl guided
it was branded and confided why
certain murals left inspiring images of time

turning back streets to dirt
where each hoof imprinted a lasting
impression and the memories dust-blown confession

history has a way of releasing
the richness of life and the dust
is just a reminder of the day

there was just one place
it bought us some time where the
spirit rode for years on yesterday's jaded ace
