In Memory of a Friend,

On The Anniversary of His Death

“There was blood on the saddle and blood all around,

And a great big puddle of blood on the ground.

A cowboy lay in it, all covered with gore,

And he never will ride any broncos no more.”

Tex Ritter,

Blood On The Saddle

Old Pete was a big man

He stood six-foot three

He loved to ride his pony

Said it made him feel free

He served his nation honorably

In that bloody old Vietnam War

But when he returned back home

Things were different than before

His kind were looked down on

He couldn’t get any real work

He had those terrible flashbacks

And he was cruelly labeled a jerk

He soon became a recluse

Riding alone on the prairie

Even his former sweetheart

Someone else did she marry

I first met Pete many years ago

At a large VA Hospital out west

He figured he’d been left behind

And he couldn’t get past his stress

So he soon moved out to the country

And lived with his horse under the stars

He often wondered what had happened

As he now drank too much liquor at the bar

They found Pete a few years ago

He had shot himself and his horse

He was buried in a pauper’s grave

Branded a crazy old lunatic of course

War’s hell can truly torment a man

I hope old Petey’s now finally at rest

We need to start honoring our veterans

And stop treating them like crazy old pests

Rest in Peace, My Friend
