“Life is as dear to the mute creature,
As it is to a man.
Just as one wants happiness and fears pain,
Just as one wants to live and not to die,
So do other creatures.”
The Dalai Lama
My heart always breaks
When I read a sad tale like this
Far too many species, are now gone
This one, the last on the Endangered List
He had been named ‘Macho B’
He was the very last one, of his kind
Once, Jaguars roamed the entire Southwest
Now, no others like him, could Macho B find
I recall my wife’s father telling me
When he was a boy, in New Mexico
He would often spot a pair of Jaguars
On the high desert mesas, thrilling him so
Macho B was spotted, just south of Tucson
But he often looked, quite forlorn and afraid
He got caught in a bear trap, several months ago
So they decided to give him a tracking collar that day
The last Jaguar in these United States didn’t like his collar
His health began deteriorating rapidly, so they put him down
I never saw much coverage of his death, on the national news
Today, in our nation, not one wild Jaguar is still alive, to be found
There is already some idle talk of re-introducing Jaguars to our nation
But we all know what’s happening to the Wolf, who was brought back
I very sadly hope that the now extinct Jaguars will be able to rest in peace
Re-introduced Wolves are now being killed by the hundreds, in vicious attacks
