A man has nightmares about a childhood incident he'd rather much forget.

Every time I close my eyes, I see them.

You would think that I, a grown, successful lawyer, would not be scared of anyhing, but here you are wrong.  Very much so.

I am scared of fowl, in paticular chickens.  Roosters especially.  I can't stand them.  I see one, even in pictures or on television, and I about come unglued.  Same thing applies to whenever I hear a rooster crowing to greet the day.

I don't live on a farm: I live in a high rise penthouse smack dab in the middle of New York City where you don't see very many chickens (unless you go to China Town or one of the many ethnic neighborhoods here, which I avoid as much as possible), but I am terrified of roosters just the same.

I see their small, beady eyes, their bright red comb perched on top of their heads, their feathers, their skinny, ugly feet and legs, and (gasp!) their sharp, pointed beaks, and I about come unglued.  See, when I was a little boy, I'd gone to a county fair with my family, and while exploring the chicken barn, one of those roosters, a big, fat monster of a beast, managed to chase me and zap the hell out of my hand.

Guess I didn't know any better, but still, the incident spooked me.  To this day, chickens in general undo me, but roosters ae the worst.

My wife knows about my rooster phobia, but not many others do except a few select friends.  I'd rather keep a lid on it; if people knew about my fear, I'd probably be laughed right out of New York City.  Yet the fear is very real to me, and I have been seeing a psychologist, trying to get a handle on it, but I really don't seem to be making any headway because I still have these godforsaken nightmares just about every night, and it's starting to drive me insane!

I wonder if I'm going crazy or just blowing things way out of proportion ...
