Cole's Story.: Special Needs Parenting 101.!

A little boy with Down syndrome's story, as told by his brother.

Cole Ezekial is my little brother.  He is six years old and I can't imagine my life without him.

My name is Terrell Wayne.  I am 9 years old.  I am Cole's best buddy.  He and I do just about everything together as long as his health holds out.  So far he's managed to stay well and out of the hospital; the last time he was in was three years ago when he had open heart surgery; it was a scary time for all of us, but God managed to bring him through, which was a huge answer to all our prayers.

Cole is the healthiest now than he has ever been.  He loves to rough house with me, even though we still remind him to take it easy; we don't want his heart acting up again.  It could, but so far, it hasn't.  I pray it doesn't.  We just have to remind Cole that his heart isn't nearly as strong as ours is and so he has to be careful not to get over excited or over stressed or over stimulated.

In addition to his heart issues, Cole is slow in his learning and development.  He has mental disabilities which make him seem much younger: he is still in diapers and is still trying to master the task of toilet training.  He can talk, but he prefers to use sign language; it's much easier for him; talking takes too much in the way of effort.  He can walk, but he tends to waddle like a duck.  It's really cute to watch h im.

Cole looks a lot like me excepting for his green eyes (they are tilted up, like a person from China's eyes, giving him an "Oriental" look) and his round, moon-shaped face, thick neck, small ears, square hands and feet, and short, stufbby fingers and toes.  He is small for his age and quite chubby in appearance.  In addition, he has fire-red hair that resembles a lit matchstick, especially when he is out in the sunlight; it looks like a small bright flame.

Cole got the red hair from Daddy.  Mama and I (as well as our thirteen year old sister, Dominique) all have brown hair and hazel eyes.

Cole likes to play, eat fried chicken and fries for lunch (we make low salt meals for him; it's easier on his heart), watch tv (he loves Teletubbies, which I can't stand, but that's his favorite, as is Caillou, which is a lot better for him ... not to mention, us!), play with his toy trucks, cars, and action figures, and be read to or snuggled before he goes to bed for the night.  He is a rather agreeable child, but he definitely hates going to the doctor's or to his therapy appointments (I mean, what kid does?? I don't blame  him one bit!  I wouldn't like it either!).

Well, it is time for me to get Cole ready for bed, so I will get him ready, pick out a book to read to him (tonight it's "Good Night Moon" and ""Give A Mouse A Cookie"), and then tuck him in and kiss him goodnight.  I also have to get Mama, so she can hook him up to his oxygen; he wears oxygen at night as he has asthma and sometimes has trouble with his breathing.  I will write in here another day; I will write more about not only Cole, but the rest of our family.  Unitl then, this is Terrell saying so long; may God bless you! He did us with giving Cole to us; Cole is the best little brother I could have ever wanted ... or asked for!
