A short story about fear and trembling in one's own head.

While I was safe at home in my bed,  thundering thoughts  played in my head. My heart raced, as the violin music got louder and closer. I realized it was pure evil coming for me. The cubical room got smaller and more distorted as fear gripped me with a sickening twist of time and space. Mr. Satan paradoxically became queasy thinking thoughts with spectres of evil twins running amok in the town square, yelling, “ We’re all going to die! ‘Ere this day ends we’re ALL GOING to DIE!”

Johnny Paycheck, singing, “The Only Hell My Mama Ever Raised,” blared on the car radio as I sang, “Precious memories, take me back to the Devil’s ways...” I drove hard and fast to escape, a rising tide of evil gripping me tighter and tighter. The faster I went the smaller my heart shrank, till the only thing I felt was a pulse of mortal fear encapsulate my soul. On and on I drove till the road disappeared into a blur of white lines and yellow dots against a fiery crimson sky; the blaze of a thousand towns succumbing to the sickening roll of mushroom clouds baking the guts right out of them.

Blinded by the light, green flashed around me and suddenly I was awakened in my bed again, safe and sound with not a scratch on me. Mama knocked on the door and said, “ It's time to get up for school, hurry or you’ll miss the bus again...”  Smiling I reached under the pillow and grabbed something cold, hard and shiny and decided today, was going to be a good day after all, as I tucked the gun into my pants and headed off to dear old Columbine High!
