Transplanted from Rhode Island I now reside in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. However, I believe my thinking and who I am is molded by the fact that I grew up in New England. My husband is from Bangladesh, and I have traveled there several times. I am the mother of two grown children Faruk and Aleisha who are married to Janet and Josh. Faruk and Janet have two children, Michael and Kieran. Aleisha and Josh’s first baby, to be called Sam, is due in October, 2006. These children are our delight and our pride. My life has been dedicated to children in one way or another. I have a deep spiritual faith that keeps me very involved in my church. It is like having an extended family. My newest love is writing, and this has led me to create a Writers Group which meets once a month. In this group I have presented poetry, essays, short stories, and the children’s book that I was writing. In New England a person’s ethnic background plays a big part in who they perceive themselves to be. I always have thought of myself as Irish and English. My mother used to say, “We have Indian blood, you know.” I basically ignored her words, and she did not pursue it. In the last several years, I have been introduced to Native American culture and tradition. My NA ancestry is not a large part of my ethnic background, but I am totally drawn to it. As far as I have been able to learn, we are descended from two sisters of the Wampanoag Tribe, Aquinnah Band, Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. I have one published book. That book is co-authored with Storm Hendrickson and is called LESSONS OF HONOR AND WISDOM, OLD TESTAMENT STORIES TOLD THROUGH THE EYES OF A NATIVE AMERICAN GRANDFATHER. Storm lives in Maine. We worked on the book over the phone and on MSN Instant Messenger. I believe that the book reflects our background and interests. The stories are taken from Old Testament stories and told as if they happened to Native American people. It written mindful of the way the use of oral tradition is employed by our people to pass down our culture and stories to the younger generations. Since our path on the Red Road is so important to both of us, we chose to write about Bible stories. I invite you to read our book…we think you’ll love it.
