"March to a different drummer..."( from Henry David Thoreau)

Background Information

I am a freelance writer, lecturer, and discussion facilitator.

My new book is FROM MY LIFE: TRAVELS AND ADVENTURES, a collection of 22 essays available at amazon.com or directly from me (contact me at davidgarnes@msn.com).

I am also the  author of AFTER THE WAR WAS OVER: POEMS OF AN AMERICAN CHILDHOOD (also available at amazon.com), as well as many articles, essays, memoir pieces, and reviews in a wide variety of books and journals.

My next publication will be WAITIN' FOR THE TRAIN TO COME IN, a novel with a World War II setting. I am also working on a second volume of travel/adventure essays.

A former English teacher, I taught at various secondary schools in New York City. After a career change, I worked at Columbia University for ten years as head of book acquisitions at Butler Library. I moved to New England in 1981 and retired in 2002 from the University of Connecticut Libraries, where I was head of acquisitions and collection development and, later, a part-time reference librarian. I have also taught undergraduate and graduate classes at Eastern Connecticut State University and Southern Connecticut State University.

In addition to my writing activities, I have been a  house manager and am currently a guide and trainer at the Emily Dickinson Museum in Amherst MA.

I also lead book discussion groups for the Connecticut Humanities Council at public libraries and other venues around the state.
