I love the adventure of research. Nature research means climbing trees, backpacking, wading streams, watching wildlife in its natural setting and writing down everything I see. That's not a bad job!

I was raised on a farm in the San Joaquin Valley of California, spending my time playing around farm animals, helping to milk cows, climbing trees and catching frogs. I loved gathering eggs and teaching calves how to drink from a bucket. I was blessed to have that kind of childhood. My books reflect a love of nature and a life close to the land. I am curious about many things, and I suppose I think of life as a big adventure.

I love to visit schools and talk with students. I have been doing school programs for many years, talking about writing, research and the drawing process. I draw with colored pencils, because it is a good medium for wilderness sketching, and it allows a lot of detail. I sometimes illustrate with pencil or ink as well. I love to travel, and I enjoy sharing the things I learn along the way.
