I wrote my first story during girl scouts. I can’t recall how old I was. I also can’t recall what the story was about, however I do know it was at that moment that I wanted to be a writer.
I went from writing stories by myself to years later finding a friend who shared my love of writing. We wrote about the neighborhood boys and later exchanged them to read. Reading those stories now, the thought process of a twelve year old girl is really interesting.
Writing became my best friend when my mother relocated from New Jersey to Florida. I didn’t have any friends to write with or neighborhood boys to write about but Bobby Brown, Omar Epps, R. Kelly, Michael Jordon and slew of other actors, singers, rappers and athletes gave me something to write about. One day after eating breakfast at school, with my new friends, I pulled out my notebook and someone said “Let me see that pink notebook.” Ever since then I had a new writing buddy and two friends who were eager to see what I had written.
The older I got I became preoccupied with life challenges, yet my passion for writing never disappeared. One day while at work, I decided I was going to be a writer. And that was the day I began writing Chante’s Song. The rest is history.
