Hank Nuwer has put together a life revolving around writing, adventure, teaching and family. Best known for his four books and expertise on hazing, his new book is a novel titled "Sons of the Dawn: A Basque Odyssey."

Just as a reading of many books does invariably shape the educated reader, so too do classroom experiences with different professors shape the college undergraduate. As a rough but unready undergraduate myself in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, I was influenced beyond measure by an incredible English professor at Buffalo State College.

Fraser Drew corresponded with the likes of John Masefield and Robinson Jeffers, even traveling to Cuba to speak face-to-face with Ernest Hemingway and get his signature on first editions to use as trolling bait for undergraduates.

It's fair to say that Hemingway was an influence, and I hope my own direct uncomplicated word choices are appreciated by readers.

Since my latest book "Sons of teh West: A Basque Odyssey"  is a book for young adults set in late nineteenth-century Idaho with two brothers and a dog named Lazarus as its heroes, I ought to pay homage to four other direct influences, the authors Jim Kjelgaard, Robert Laxalt (who was kind and encouraging to me), Jesse Stuart (we corresponded) and Jim Kjelgaard (I own all his book titles).

His gift to the college is a collection of signed books, signed letters from authors with whom he corresponded, photographs, and drafts of some of his manuscripts." From the BSC Library Site
