Dear Literary Connoisseurs,
My name is William Bailey, and I’m a new science fiction writer. Just to tell you a little about myself, I’m the son of a railroader and a native of Michigan. To name a few of my hobbies, I enjoy hiking, canoeing, biking, camping, reading, watching a good movie, and restoring classic cars. I reside with my wife in northern Michigan, which is a wonderful place to live even though I’ve been known to curse living here during the heart of winter.
Long ago, when I was only thirteen years old, my parents bought a home on lake near Walhalla, MI. Like most of northwest Michigan’s recreational areas, it was always bustling with vacationing tourist in the summer, but isolated and mostly deserted during the long winter months. I lived at the house on the lake with my parents until I met the girl I would eventually marry, Renee Rohrmoser. I met her during our senior year of high school, and we’ve been best friends ever since. After we married, I worked several menial jobs before I eventually found my niche in the real estate industry. For over a decade now, I have been an associate broker, broker-owner, and environmentally conscious developer.
Renee and I moved a few times over the years. For years we lived in a small Bavarian chalet literally built on the edge of a small trout stream before we moved into a log home we built by ourselves in the middle of 40 acres. We lived there until just a few years ago when we sold it and moved into our present home located just north of Ludington, Michigan. Ludington is a small cozy tourist town that was originally built on the shores of Lake Michigan during the booming lumbering era. Although the town is small and quaint, its sugar sand beach stretches out for miles. Renee and I love to bask on the beach, so we spend as much time as we can during the summer months enjoying it.
As a child I liked all cartoons, but Jonny Quest was one of my favorites along with watching the Star Trek series. I must have watched every episode of Star Trek at least a hundred times growing up. Though a lot of science fiction movies have made an impression on me over the years, I will never forget going to the local theater and being blown away by the first Star Wars movie. I think I went back and watched George Lucas’ masterpiece twenty times that year. It’s a little strange how I ended up writing, something I go into detail about in the front matter of my book in a section titled,"The Epiphany." I will tell you that while visiting Disney World during the millennium celebrations in 1997 (one of my favorite places in the world) that I was inspired after sitting through one of the theatrical presentations. It was a presentation that finished with a suggestion to explore your imagination, and to read books like Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, The Time Machine, or The War of the Worlds, and The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells. And so, I did, including Moby Dick by Herman Melville, and the words of these authors opened my mind and I’m sure guided my pen writing this first volume of The Great Ship of Knowledge. I hope you enjoy my first work if you choose to read it, and feel free to contact me directly with any questions or comments at thegreatshipofknowledge@charter.net
My warmest regards, William Bailey
