The Civil War in Indian Territory was deadly, but virtually unknown. I wanted to explore why all the Five Civilized Tribes went over to the Confederacy, what it was like to fight in this forgotten corner of the war, and what the war was like from the perspective of an Indian. In a semi-autobiographical bent, I also wanted to explore the alienation of a mixed-blood who feels Indian among whites and white among Indians.
