Writing, teaching, traveling and living the writer's life. That's my gig. John Gardner, who carried his five unpublished manuscripts around with him as he continued to write and hone his Art of Fiction, and Emily Dickinson, Virginia Woolf and Anais Nin, who understood the power of discipline and perseverance, influenced and empowered my carreer choices. I have a Doctor of Arts with a concentration on the teaching of writing and literature. My dissertation was a volume of my own poetry.
I spent one year in Cambridge, England working as a waitress in a vegetarian restaurant, writing and touring the pubs with a music major--three years in Turkey, teaching and traveling the country--weeks in India, China and Europe. When I'm not writing or sharing time with fellow writers, family and friends, I'm restoring old houses, gardening or searching for treasures in thrift stores or yard sales.
Currently, I am working on the 1st volume of the Kado Wolfe Mystery Series. The second volume needs tweaking. Thirty-three chapters of the third is outlined. My character, Kado Wolfe is alive, well and wandering the world with her nose raised to the moon in a resounding howl. You go girl! Shortstop Sparks isn't far behind. We know that because she's not one to keep her mouth shut and her mom--who passed away--still keeps her in line. Intuitive women who are New Age savvy--that's where my energy lies...
When I read Eckhart Tolle's book Awakening to Your Life's Purpose, his Pain Body chapter blew me away, helping me to understand my inner beast. What a life changing book.
Accomplishments: My work appears in a variety of publications, including, The Broad River Review, Periphery, The Elkhorn Review, One Town Folio, Weather Eye, Doorknobs & BodyPaint and The American Culture and Literature Journal published in Turkey. I earned my Doctor of Arts degree in English Education and Writing from Drake University where I taught as a Fellow for three years. Does that mean I was a guy in a past life? Oh, dear! I swore I was a dolphin! To my amazement and that of my committee, my dissertation developed into a collection of my own poetry. While living and writing in Cambridge, England I won a literary prize at Emerson College/Cambridge University. In Turkey, I read my work throughout the country and published in several venues while teaching at a Turkish private university. After returning to the states, The Iowa Arts Council awarded me a grant for the writing of The Old Wolf Lady: A Biography. In America, Prairie Lights Bookstore and Northside Book Store in Iowa City, Barnes & Noble in Cedar Rapids and The University of Pittsbugh Semester at Sea Program traveling from Athens to St. Petersburg, Russia and back invited me to read my work. Membership in The Pine Island Writers` Group, The Florida Writers' Association, The Naples Press Club and an Iowa City Writers` Group affords me support and quality critique opportunities. And last, but definitely not least, exploring my craft and the biz continues--a sheer pleasure for a postal, postmodern woman. Did I just put myself in a box! Hey, let me out of here!
Write! Woman! Write!
