I didn't get the education that I wanted. I was busy trying to be a substitute mother to five younger siblings while my mother spent the day at work. Depression, poverty, and instability reigned over our highly dysfunctional household but that, thank God, is not the end of the story. There was a silver lining in the toxic cloud that threatened to undo us, and I kept my eyes on that. I will call it hope. Something kept me alive during those days, something real, something strong. I choose to believe that that "Something" was God.
Some have suggested that I have a Pollyanna attitude and perhaps I do. I usually believe the best about people, possibilities, and circumstances until reality makes it impossible to do so. Most of the time, I am not disappointed. I really believe that if we could see through the facade that many people wear like a protective amour, we would find a tender heart, sensitive feelings, and a longing for love and dignity in just about everybody. Everybody, that is except for a few of Dean Koontz's heartless assassins or Ted Dekker's evil villains. Some of those characters defy even the slightest modicum of inherent human goodness. I wish I could write like them. Dean Koontz and Ted Dekker, I mean. Maybe when I grow up...
I got my real estate license when I was nineteen years old. I didn't like real estate then. I didn't do much of anything then because I liked it, but strangely enough, I like it now. I buy multiple family apartment complexes (small ones) for a hobby, sort of. My husband manages them... and I write. Talk about "having your cake and eating it, too." :-)
Life has not always been easy, but then a life of ease isn't always the best...for anybody. I don't think I am tough. I don't always think I am strong. However, I believe that every day I can be better, stronger, and bolder than I was the day before. And I still see the silver lining behind just about every cloud.
