My new book is The Poet Slave of Cuba (Henry Holt & Co., 2006), a young adult biography-in-poems about the youth of Juan Francisco Manzano, who became a celebrated poet in Cuba during the mid-1800s, while he was still a slave. It is a Junior Library Guild Selection Editor's Choice, and has starred reviews from Booklist and School Library Journal, as well as great reviews from childrenslit.com and Kirkus.
