I was born in LaMirada, California, and was raised in Cadott, Wisconsin. My father joined the U.S. Army after I completed fifth grade. I have lived in Georgia, Germany and Texas. I graduated from a Department of Defense High School in Augsburg, Germany, in 1989. I graduated with a bachelor of arts in journalism from the University of Texas at El Paso in December 1994. I married my husband, Craig, on May 4, 1996, in El Paso, Texas. After that, I joined the Army, where I served a broadcast journalist from 1996-2001. I was stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia, the same base my father had been assigned years before, and Vilseck, Germany.
My husband & I moved to southeastern New Mexico in July 2001. I worked as lifestyles editor for a small daily newspaper in southeastern New Mexico for 5 1/2 years. In 2007 I began a new adventure at the paper I've worked for the past five years, I became the education reporter.
In 2006 I became a graduate student because I wanted to become a teacher in language arts, social studies and drama at the secondary level. I started at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, New Mexico, in August 2006, where I completed nine credit hours. In fall 2007 I will continue to pursue a Masters of Science degree in Education and teaching license at University of the Southwest (formerly College of the Southwest) in Hobbs. I hope to graduate in spring 2010.
As a journalist I have had numerous features and a few news stories published by Associated Press in newspapers across the country.
I have volunteered as a leader with Girl Scouts. I was a Scout for eight years as a child and earned the Girl Scout Gold and Silver Award. I've been involved in Girl Scouting 20 plus years; in 2006 I became a lifetime member of Girl Scouting. Now that I'm a graduate student, I have a small role as a volunteer with the Lea County Girl Scouts.
I have also been a mentor for Lea County Women's Network and the Wise Men and Women program at Hobbs Municipal Schools.
I started writing at age 14. It was at that age that I started delving into journalism as well, working for my high school and later my college paper.
I write both poetry and fiction, primarily romance novels. My short stories are not the typical, traditional short story. They are more like novellas, ranging from 10,000 words or more.
My writing style is episodic, which lends itself well to the serial or series writing I primarily do. I often can see my work being used as a play, TV show or movie -- this can be done easily in episodic style. I use a lot of dialogue and my characters and situations seem real because I tend to write about personal experiences and real people but exaggerate it.
I have had many adventures and love to share, so if you ever want to talk about writing you know what to do ... just be prepared for your ear to turn blue.
Birth Place: LaMirada, CA USA
Accomplishments: Published three poems, "A Desert Storm", "Princess, Please Don't Cry" and "Inside the Essence of Me" in El Portal, New Mexico University's literary magazine in fall edition 2006.
Won third place in the spots news category in the New Mexico Associated Press Newspaper Editors Contest in 2006.
Won third place in the features category in the New Mexico Associated Press Newspaper Editors Contest in 2005. Won second- and third-place respectively in the New Mexico Associated Press Newspaper Editors Contest in 2002.
