Mary Jean Kelso recently won The 2008 Nevada Press Award for Best Spot News Story for her part in coverage of the Fernley Flood in January 2007. She is a multi-genre' author who has written for many newspapers and magazines. She worked as an Editor for pharmaceutical magazines and as a Customer Services Representative for a Raytheon Company. She works for The Lahontan Valley News writing features

I guess you could say story telling and Western history run in my blood. My dad was born in Texas. He was a big man, about 6'3" and was a true cowboy as a young man before working for SP Railroad. When he and my mother were first married his parents and brothers and the newly wed couple (my folks) drove a herd of cattle from Texas to Montana. On the way, my oldest sister was born in Sante Fe. It seemed, of each of us 8 kids, only 2 were born in the same state. Anyway, my grandparents then raised hay for the cavalry up in Montana. My dad's grandfather on his mother's side was a Texas Ranger and his father was killed at the Alamo. Another of his Uncles was killed at a battle at Golaid. My grandmother on my mother's side was a New Mexico homesteader when it was rare for women to claim land as their own. She also was a school teacher in the early days of New Mexico.
