I was born and raised in Egypt. Learned English at an English high school in Cairo. Was employed by the United Nations in Egypt, Congo and Togo. Moved to Lebanon for a while and immigrated to the United States in 1967.
I was a bookworm. Read nonfiction avidly, including dictionaries and thesauri. I crawled through anything in print, whether in English, French or Armenian. My taste in books is eclectic ranging from American, Middle Eastern, European to Armenian, Afghan, Iranian and Indian authors.
My first article was published in 1960. I wrote off and on, contributing several articles, in Armenian and in English, to newspapers, magazines, anthologies and online (check website: (www.maryterzian.com), learning the ropes of the profession. Retirement offered the opportunity to become a full time writer. Released from constraints of time, I now thrive on writing nonfiction, with occasional wit, and a dash of wisdom, earned through years of experience. Under traumatic circumstances I am a closet poet. Otherwise writing is my addiction, as much as reading has been in the past. Feet on firm ground, arms converting to wings, I live somewhere between the physical world and ethereal space, trying to stabilize the meaning of life on paper. Flights of fancy? Perhaps.
After “The Immigrants' Daughter” grew from incubation to publication, paperback, and e-book I was lost for words. Now that it has reached the digital shelves I wonder if there will be other stages in its lifespan. In the meantime I plan to go forward with the next book, because my readers need me as much as I need them.

| The judges from The Writers Digest 18th International self-published book competition in 2010 evaluated my book, The Immigrants' Daughter" at 4.50/5.00 points, indicating that competition was fierce this year. I consider this ranking an honor coming from a respectable organization. Perhaps I can still make it to the top, but may miss the Pulitzer Prize. At this stage I am trying to win a patch in eternity. I am thankful that my book has changed lives and has made a deep impact on my readers, judging from the reviews and fan letters received. The satisfaction gained from these has been immense, more than any accolade I received so far.
Why do I write? I am impelled to. Maybe I want to leave a legacy of hope behind, maybe writing is a means for self-expression, an attempt to reach out and touch someone, an outlet for my feelings, a panacea for loneliness, a cure to pacify my turbulent soul, a genetic disease. Maybe I am looking for a glimmer of hope for fame, and fortune?(ha, ha). It is an occupation that makes me part of humanity, and self-actualizes me. I believe it is my mission in life. |
