I am a multilingual writer who learnt and mastered three Indian languages before starting on English. For the last 40+ years bulk of my writing has been in English, though lately I have been promoting the concept of 'transcreation' as opposed to simple word for word translation.
My earliest influence was W.S. Maugham, with his bewitching short stories and novels. Later I was influenced by the raw and hardhitting style of John Steinbeck. Peter Ustinov, not regarded as an established writer, with his powerful short stories, affected me too. Amongst the contemporary writers I find Michael Ondaatje and Ian MacEwan very potent, gripping and original. I have written three novels.
Though I prefer writing free verse, I do enjoy writing rhymed poems, especially in the Sonnet format. Quite a lot of my published work can be read at www.maxbabi.gather.com and some at facebook too.
I am half way through a unique book on Transcreated Urdu Poetry.
