What is a Podcast?

A podcast is the newest way to create and distribute audio content over radio format. (Well, almost...)

According to Wikipedia, Podcasting is a way of publishing files to a website that allows users to subscribe to the site and receive new files as they are posted. Most podcasts are spoken word audio created by individuals, often on a particular theme such as technology or movies. Because new files are downloaded automatically by subscribers, podcasting allows individuals to have a self-published, syndicated radio show.

Podcasting occurs when your iPod or other MP3 player meets broadcasting, hence the term Podcasting. Here's what happens: you subscribe to a feed, and audio files are automatically downloaded so you can listen on your MP3 player or computer.

Another way to look at it is what would happen if you combined a TiVo, with your MP3 player, with the web so, you could listen to a selection of content as varied as the web, whenever, and wherever you want.

All FREE to the listener!

Do I need an Apple iPod or other MP3 player to use this service?

No! In fact, you donít even need an MP3 player at all. You can listen and participate just with your computer. But if you have an iPod or iPod-like device, you can take voice shows with you and listen to them when youíre on the go.

How to tune in:
First, youíll need to install podcasting software. There are lots of programs out there, so here are some free ones you can try:

Next you need to "subscribe" to the feed.

In iTunes, go to "Advanced" then to "Subscribe to Podcast" and paste in You can then click on the small arrow to the left of the URL to choose which AuthorsDen Podcast show you want to download.

In iPodder, go to the "Subscriptions" tab then click on the plus sign to "Add New Feed" then paste in

Now, every time you open your podcasting software, it will automatically search for new mp3 files from AuthorsDen!

What are the advantages of 'reading works' directly to your readers (listeners)?

Readers (listeners) often identify better with an author when they are able to hear works in the author's voice. Audio files allow listeners hear and feel the authors' passions, fears, thoughts and dreams. What better way to connect with your reader than to 'talk to them'. Podcasting is like a poetry reading with thousands of listeners.

How much does the AD Open Mic program cost?
