Sage Sweetwater hopes her own name will surface as one of a notable woman in history. Women outlaws are nothing new. We exist in every century, traveling with copyright as our companion. Sage Sweetwater acknowledges lesbianism of the Old West in much of her poetry to promote her writing in a dramatic increase of curious sales, with the acceptance given to romantic friendships between women who are telling their stories and printing their books. Books are a viable "stagecoach" in which Sage Sweetwater may travel with sizzling page turners in her satchel that Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok may have taken out in trade for pistols and whiskey. Sage Sweetwater says it's a fair trade, a story for a Colt and firewater.

One of these novels plotlines, she came into existence when two women appeared from a wild, crescent-shaped ravine. The one woman, wrinkled from the desert sun, clapped a tambourine on her hip, and the other woman, the one with a baby, tilted a silver-tipped steer horn filled with goat's milk so the baby could eat. The young woman had no milk so the baby could eat. The young woman had no milk in her breasts. She was ashamed. The baby could feel the mother's disappointment that she could not nourish it from the bonding fluid from her own nipples.
The other woman dripped the milky juice of the chickory root on the mother's nipples, coaxing them to flow, but the milk did not come. "Maybe," the woman said when the baby's mother asked about kneading her breasts with the goat's butter. "Try," she told the baby's mother, handing her a clay jar of melted goat's butter from her burlap rucksack. But still, nothing flowed for her baby to drink.
The baby was sad, but did not cry. The young mother rocked her baby to sleep, while the other woman jingled her tambourine. When the baby was asleep, the woman took her bellows from her burlap rucksack and started a fire by a waterhole. They ate maroon and white pinto beans that she had cooked for three hours the day before, and drank a gypsy wine from the steer horn they shared, then the young mother washed it out in the water hole and fitted the rubber nipple over it after she filled it with goat's milk for her baby. Before letting the baby drink, she tried once more to coax her nipples to flow by staining them with a blue blush made from the earth's dyestuff, but her breasts were dry like the desert.
The two women and the baby slept out under the desert stars. When the woman awoke the next morning, the baby's mother was gone. She left her baby on a rock by the waterhole with a note saying she could never bond with this baby because she could not breast feed it, and she was leaving it in care of the woman, her mother, to raise. That baby was....

Set in St. George, Utah, and Clovis, New Mexico, FROM THE CONVENT TO THE RAWHIDE: THE SAGA OF SADIE CADE AND VI MONTANA is a modern-day feminist/lesbian western where sex and religion ride together. From atop a ridgeline, looking down into a quarry where the original Clovis people made their prized spearheads, Vi Montana and Sadie Cade convert from Mormonism to Australian Dreamtime, being that the Mormon faith is just too structured of an environment for the personalities of these two women to live by. LORAINE LEATHERBOW: THE HOUSE OF SPLEEN is a lesbian novel bent on the spiritual magic of voodoo. The yam is one-fourth of the novel's taproot ... planted, harvested, and prepared with old-world simplicity. Loraine Leatherbow is the coyote whisperer who communicates with the coyotes telepathically when they are missing from the village, freeing them from traps and cross-hairs with her voodoo. Loraine is mixed of shackle and scalp heritage, African-Negro and Native American. LORAINE LEATHERBOW: THE HOUSE OF SPLEEN has been written with a strong leaning toward the fate of the modern-day coyote, running the gamut of interracial partnerships, past and present, to the cultivation of the yam and the spiritual ties that bind cultures through shamanism and voodoo. The many elements and ideas in this novel, like all of Sage Sweetwater's novels are the things that are important to her, where her beliefs lie in the words, coming from the beautiful grains of pink-tinted sand dug from deep places from within. Recognizable, these carefully chosen stories and essays have appeared in Sage Sweetwater's various novels as part of a much bigger story. When grouped with stories of the same pith, they are comprehended more abstruse and have a more profound meaning. When previously-written stories are brought back, they enhance the newly-composed stories for a fusion of literary balance. FEMINIST FOLKTALES serves a dual purpose. Sage Sweetwater also wrote them for the college classroom for women's studies.
