After thirty or so years living in New York City and hearing untold times, "You mean you're Jewish and you're from Texas"? I decided to put it on paper. I was then sixty-five, after a career in advertising, marketing, and foreign language teaching, and I published my first book. The year was 1998, and the book is called "In Jewish Texas," a memoir of my parents, who fled Russia and Romania to Texas in the early 1900's, of their friends and family, and of my,growing up as a gay kid in Dallas. The publisher is TCU Press, Fort Worth. So, despite New Yorkers' tendency to imagine that Jews exist there alone, I am Jewish and from Texas.
Since 1998 I've published many articles and three more books: "Perfect Mondays," a gay novel; "In the Steps of Mister Proust," a coming-of-age novel; and "Living Alone Creatively," close-up interviews with twelve men and women who are living fulfilling lives without partners.
In summer 2010, I published a new novel, "Ten Ways to Your Cat's Happiness," from iUniverse, where it has been designated Editor's Choice.
In late 2013 I am about to publish a new memoir, "Life Up Close," from Dog Ear Publishers. It contains 23 essays, old and new, on family travel, food, religion, friends. I believe it's my best book..
