Background Information

Ms. Vickie M. Oliver-Lawson is a retired public school administrator, wife, and mother from Baltimore, MD. She is the author of Vocal Moments (a collection of various poems designed to inspire, heal, humor and give you food for thought), released in 2003 and published by Poeticjava_ Publishing. Ms.Oliver-Lawson is also the author of  In the Quilting Tradition ( a story about the interaction between a young man and his grandmother as she tells him about the tradition of quilting from an African perspective) released in 2005 and published by Poeticjava_ Publishing. She has another children's book entitled Assata and the Secret of the Cowrie, published by New Day Publishing (2008). Her most recent release, in 2009, is a collection of poetry called Timeless Influences which is dedicated to the memories and legacies of both her best friend and her mother.
Vickie is a member of the International Society of Poets,Black Authors Showcase,and The Arts Have It. She is an alumna of Morgan State University and Loyola College. She is listed among Who's Who in the East and Who's Who Among Business and Professional Women. Ms.Oliver-Lawson's favorite poets are Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen and Paul Laurence Dunbar. Vickie also likes selected works by Maya Angelou and Nikki Giovanni.
 
Ms.Oliver-Lawson has performed in WomenWording: An Evening of Dueling Tongues (a choreopoem that interweaves narrative prose, poetry, movement and song) which was held at The Harlem Theatre Co in New York, New York in March 2004.
 
In addition to MD poetry venues, Ms. Oliver-Lawson has also performed in NY, PA, NC, GA and Washington, DC.
 
She is currently featured at News Maryland and Baltimore Independent Media.

Accomplishments

Ms. Oliver-Lawson was recently inducted into the Baltimore chapter of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women. She was the recipient of a grant, in 2007, from the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts. She is currently working on another collection of poetry as well as several other stories for children.

Additional Information

Ms. Oliver-Lawson was the hostess for the Last Thursday poetry venue at the Eubie Blake Cultural Center in Baltimore for five years. She was featured at the Theosophical Society of Maryland's open mic poetry venue on October 18, 2009. She appeared at the Forest Park library in Baltimore on Feb. 2, 2008 in celebration of Black History month. Ms. Oliver-Lawson was heard on The Michael Baisden show, 11/14/07, reciting her signature poem, The Con Game. She was also recemtly heard on www.iRockTalkRadio.com, hosted by Jerry Royce. Her poetry is featured in an anthology, Manorborn, published by the Harford Poetry and Literary Society of Baldwin, MD. Ms. Oliver-Lawson recently published Sing A Song of Cinquains, a collection of cinquain poems by fourth graders at her school. She was recently interviewed by Jessica Tilles of J.T.Book Corner at Black Men in America and Tiffany White of Urban Essence.net. Ms.Oliver-Lawson participated in a poetry workshop at the Penn-North Library in Baltimore on April 14, 2007. She appeared at the 2007 Day of the Book Celebration in Kensington, MD on Sunday, April 22, 2007 and on the air waves of Morgan State University's Radio Station WEAA 88.9 FM on April 27, 2007. Ms. Oliver-Lawson participated and attended an event held on May 31, 2007 at the Eubie Blake Cultural Center. She appears at Eubie Blake Cultural Center on the Last Thursday of every month. Ms. Oliver-Lawson could also be heard on the air waves of 1010am on Friday,June 1,2007 from 2:00-2:30pm on a program hosted by Patsy Anderson called Meet the Author. She was a featured poet at Milton's Grill on June 5, 2007. Ms.Oliver-Lawson is working on a number of projects. She is available for book signings, interviews, and special events.
