Only One in Twelve

Felines Born In America

Ever Find a Loving Home

Millions of unwanted cats born

In America, each and every year

Millions of them are put to death

And millions of them, live in fear

Millions of them reside in our back alleys

And huddle starving, behind grocery stores

Millions of them, are abandoned by humans

Who very callously don’t love them anymore

And millions of other cat owners in America

Don’t spay and neuter, and let them roam free

So, millions and millions of their tiny offspring

Will never find homes, and they die so horribly

Far too many of our cat owners in America today

Still believe it is their own cat’s right to re-produce

Yet, they take no responsibility for its many offspring

Who are starving, and disease-riddled, and on the loose

These abandoned, abused, and forlorn orphans

For most of my life, have truly touched my heart

I found all of the many felines residing in my home

On the mean city streets, hoping for a brand new start

Today, America’s many animal shelters are now overflowing

With affectionate cats and adorable kittens, needing a friend

Please find it in your heart to help us, this ‘Adopt a Cat Month’

Please help to bring their very sad modern day plight, to an end

Only One in Twelve

Felines Born In America

Ever Find A Loving Home;

And I Would Truly Love

To Read Someone Else’s

June Feline Adoption Poem.

But If You Can’t Adopt,

Please Donate This Month,

To An Animal Shelter,

Or A Cat Sanctuary,

Near Your Home.

Most Animal Shelters in America,

Are Today, Woefully Underfunded,

They Don’t Have Room For All of Them;

Eleven Out of Twelve Very Deserving Felines,

Today, Meet a Very Horrible, Much Too Soon, End.

I'm glad you did this and: "Far too many of our cat owners in America today

Still believe it is their own cat’s right to re-produce

Yet, they take no responsibility for its many offspring

Who are starving, and disease-riddled, and on the loose"

PEOPLE are the crux of the CAT (and abandoned animal) problem but also the solution. That's how I got the three cats that I fell in love with and consequently actually had to sacrifice quite a lot for but I supppose it was worth it. 2 of those are now dead but they had FULL lives. I never got a cat that wasn't abandoned due to someone elses callousness. And yet they turned out to be great pets although one rescue (a kitten I found under a bridge fishing) was such a little runt when someone just "tossed him" under a bridge that I knew he hadn't even been weaned. When I gave him his first taste of food, I knew he had never even known food before. I saved him from death but he's still scarred and when anyone but me comes in the house he ditches under the furniture. But 3 was the limit I could do and now is not the time to take another in my situation. I'm sad as it was a drop in the bucket and basically I'm a sucker for abandoned cats.... Hopefully I'll get somewhere soon where I can have more without it tieing me down.

Thanks for this, Later: michael

Dear Ed, what a wonderful tribute to all the felines who are without homes, family or friends. Let's hope it triggers a response and that millions of American cats will be found loving new families to care for them. Pray so, at least.

Hi Ed,

I have four foster kittens right now. I'm doing my part and agree, a donation to an animal rescue or shelter either from your pocketbook or time cuddling a pet is highly appreciated.

An informative write.. Feline creatures need love and a place to call home. Its hard to have them as a pet when they are wild. They do not trust like a house cat does, yet we keep feeding them and trying to win them over.. I named one ,Marty, He'll come when I call him , but I can't get close enough to touch him. Tiger has gone back to her previous owner down the street with her kittens....M

Ed, it's so sad to see abandoned cats hiding in the brush near fast food restaurants...some say, "Those cats are wild...don't you dare touch them! They should all be killed." Why are they so intimidated? I'll tell you why, they've been left as small kitties with "no" way to obtain food and they've had to fight for every bite they get. Many heartless people leave their animals without a care in the world thinking they can fend for themselves...how would the people like to be put out with "no" where to go and "no" way to get food. It's shameless Ed and I feel so helpless on this issue because there are soooooo many cats living without homes. An excellent write Ed.

You know my feelings on this matter, and it's heartbreaking to read the statistics. All shelter cats will have been neutered or spayed, and await adoption. Don't know how anyone wouldn't adopt and take one (at least) home with them. My seven indoors are my treasures, and the 14 semi-feral outdoors I feed and water (twice daily...no wonder they don't leave :o) also give me great pleasure. Two I've been able to have spayed then released; hard to trap the others...they're wiley li'l buggers. Blessings to you Ed for this poetic, vital information!

Ed,
I have adopted several cats and all of mine have been spayed or neutered. Heidi was one of two surviving kittens of a feral cat, living on the beach near our apartment complex (9 years ago). Her Mother was mean and both Heidi and her sister sought refuge on our doorstep. We kept Heidi and found a good, indoor home for her sister. Heidi has become a wonderful cat.
Bitsy is the other side of the story. My former neighbors had a cat named "B.K" or "Brat Kat." Brat Kat became pregnant with kittens, the kittens were born, and when the neighbors moved, they turned all of the kittens loose in the neighborhood. Bitsy's brother found a home, a block away, but when Bitsy finally came next door to us, she'd obviously not eaten in quite some time. Now, 6 years later, she is healthy and while she's a scatterbrain, sometimes, she is a good cat!

Thanks, Ed, for this excellent poem and reminder. Living along the Texas Coastline, we think negatively upon June 1st and the start of hurricane season, each year; maybe, this reminder will allow me to find some good!

All the kitties thank you, Ed; what a wonderful thing it is to adopt a FFF (Furry Feline Friend); I know how it is. My "Cajie" ("Cajun") came from the local animal shelter; she was the bestest cat I ever had! If we could adopt a FFF now, believe me, we would, in a New York Second!! (Maybe one day....*Sighhh* We may eventually have pets later on here; hope so! If so, we may adopt two kitties!)

Very well written reminder, as only you can do; you are ever the champion for our furry and feathered friends! God bless you!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :D

All the kitties are purring, thanking you for reminding us to adopt a furry friend - wish we could - can't have pets here - maybe later - if so, we will adopt one or two (wish we could adopt 'em all) - every cat we see, we adopt in our hearts - our hearts runneth over with furry love! LOL Well done, Ed -

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
