As a boy, James was determined to work in Hollywood. He would often sit for hours listening to his uncle describe the screenplays he was writing, and which story ideas would make the best films. James' dream of becoming a famous actor was discouraged by his parents, however.

Thus, the young Matthewson shifted his dream job to directing and producing films. Unfortunately, this hope was crushed as well after a series of moves around the country.

Matthewson did not find an interest in writing until he read J.R.R Tolkien's Lord of the Rings Trilogy. These books inspired James to write good prose, particularly fantasy.

In mid-2009, James was hired by a local newspaper as a result of a political essay he wrote.

James currently resides in Denver, CO with his family. In late 2009, he started work on his debut fantasy novel, which he hopes to have completed by mid-2010. Outside of writing, he enjoys reading, playing guitar, and art.
