Just when I had almost finished compiling my poems to be published for my second book Tendrils, I wrote a very pious and deeply prophetic poem which I titled "Children of Light". I saw it was beautiful and decided I should also include it along side the other pieces.
Then few days later, while I was curled in bed at night, a strange man appeared in my dream and reviewed the very piece. He struck out words he thought needed not be included and also reshaped the lines. Then he said to me, "Be poet!" Then I began to wonder why he said be poet and not be poetic. I was to decipher the meaning when I wake up.
When I woke up, I picked up the poem and considered his suggestions; then I debated within me if I should actually effect his corrections. I had thought the poem was perfectly written and should not be altered for any reason. After much deliberation with myself I got the notion his visit could have been a divine interference, and I conceded.
So I believe I received a divine coronation and ordination to write poetry since then.
Ever since my mandate as a poet, I have written poetry with the zeal and passion of a fanatic. And I hope that through my poetry I might provoke my readers to sound reasoning and creative thinking.
Before my second book I had launched my first book at a public gathering. I involved the public because I was concerned for the intellectual rediscovery of the African people. I had worried that far back as thousands of years BC Greek philosophers had engaged almost every critical rational, but here are many Africans about two thousand years AD who didn't even know there is an intellect which should be utilized. So my writing was born basically out of an ambition to stimulate Africans to thinking, beginning with the many who can read.
Naturally, for me, I don't even attempt to write when I'm not inspired to. I feel that for a writer to hurry to be prolific at the expense of thought and inspiration is a desecration of the nobility of writing.
So, my writing is very inspirational and purely spontaneous. As a result my poetry is not fashioned for any particular theme or subject.
