I'm the one you'd probably catch staring off into the sky ... or at a bird passing by. I'd fly away myself if I could; whereto, I don't know, but I'd definitely fly away from here--far, far, far away from here ....

Background Information

Dewesse is a W.E.B Dubois Honor Graduate in English from Jackson State University has a Master's in English with a focus on African-American literature from Tennessee State University. He has three years of experience teaching English on the secondary level, and has taught Sophomore American Literature on the collegiate level as a graduate-assistant to the chair of English department at Tennessee State University. He has been featured in The BASU Source, Nashville's leading Black LGBT Publication, Examiner.com Nashville, the Jackson Advocate newspaper in Jackson, MS, and was awarded iUniverse's prestigious "Editor’s Choice" honor for his debut novel, To Be Loved: Because it Was Forbidden. Among other honors, he was being selected to be a reader at the 2011 UNC Queer Studies Conference in April, and his poetry—“It Must Be Love” and “Caged Bird”—was also selected, during his matriculation at Jackson State University, to be published in Black Magnolias, a literary publication in Mississippi. Dewesse is originally from Vicksburg, Miss, and he currently lives in Nashville, Tennessee with his partner of five years.

Additional Information

"To be loved .." is to this generation what "Invisible Life" was to the last. In this next generation classic J.R. Dewesse talks literally and figuratively about two men that we all know; Jordan and Jericho. You know them so well because to grow up African American and gay is to have a little bit of Jordan and little bit of Jericho inside of you. Dewesse gives you a tour of the maximum security facility of being on the "Down Low" as seen through the eyes of Jericho while the parallel story of the escaped fugitive on the underground railroad to freedom is seen through the eyes of Jordan. In the end just as it was in the beginning their paths will cross but you'll have to read this story to find out if it's too late or if happily ever after is within reach. I can't wait to read Dewesse's next novel. He is sure to be a household name....." -Frederick Cheeseborough
