Why do I write? By Laura Eckroat – August, 2010

When people would ask me why I write … I would stop and wonder … “Why do I write?”  I could have answered – because I love it … but that seemed strange – I love ice cream but I don’t own and ice cream shop!  So while taking a walk … I thought “Laura, why do you write?”

I realized … I have always written.  When I was younger, much younger, I started keeping a Journal.  My friends that were girls would say “oh, you have a diary?” and I would say … “no, it’s a journal.”  I never wrote Dear Diary, I love Andrew.  Andrew is so cute.  That, or something similar, is what my friends had in their “diaries.”  I, on the other hand, would write about the clouds, or the plants, or any other neat thing I saw, heard, or came across that day.

I feel as if I observe nature and the things around me, possibly differently than other people.  I love to sit and just watch things.  I love driving in my car with no radio on, I like being in the house with no TV on.  I like being able to think and not let my thoughts be disturbed by noise I can control.  People, plants, birds, insects, the sky, anything; it is all interesting to me.

So … I have always written.  I have always written down things I’ve observed in a journal—but this still did not answer the question of why I write.  Since the computer age, it’s easier to write those thoughts into coherent sentences.  Some may turn into a book and some may be just for me to go back and read every once in a while.  But why do I write these things down?  Or type them into my computer?

I started writing “Bud” a long time ago.  I am thinking it had to be at least 10 – 12 years ago.  My daughter was young.  It had a working title of “Bud, The Littlest Leaf”.  Ashley, my daughter, even drew some pictures to compliment this story.  But I never could finish it.  I knew I wanted to write a story about a tree and a leaf … but I could never find an ending – the story just wasn’t going anywhere.

One day I was in the shower and BAM … the story just came to me.  I had been suffering grief after the loss of my father to colon cancer.  I came out of the shower and there no longer was “Bud, The Littlest Leaf” – the story transformed and “The Life of Bud” was born.

When I speak to children I tell them to never give up on a story.  Never give up on an idea.  Maybe when you start a story and you can’t finish it, put it away -- bring it out another day or wait for that moment you have passion to write.

So … I can now answer that burning question – why do I write?  And, my answer is, because I have ideas in my heart and soul that I want to share with children and adults and myself.  I want children and adults to be able to share time together while reading my work.  I want to spark feelings and thoughts and ideas and I want children to think, ask questions and enjoy the world around them as much as I do.

I was born and raised in Whiting, IN.  I have lived in Colorado, Georgia, Massachusetts, and now resides in Fort Worth, TX with my husband, Steven; daughter, Ashley; and two dogs -- Mabel and Muffin.  I previously was a school teacher in Chicopee, MA; and before that a human resources manager for a major oil company and the general manager of an educational toy store.  I am a HUGE Chicago Bears Football FAN!!!
