"Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass." -- Anton Chekhov

Background Information

My favorite poet is Gerard Manley Hopkins.  Other influences include Wallace Stevens, Syvia Plath, Charles Bukowski, Adrienne Rich, Emily Dickinson and others.

I studied poetry and playwriting for a year with William Packard at NYU and didn't start writing until my mid-40s.  Although poetry writing is a solitary act, I love collaborating with other artists on poetry projects.

Accomplishments

Alice Shapiro is a Pushcart-nominated poet and author of three collections of poetry. She was also nominated for Georgia Author of the Year for her first poetry book Cracked: Timeless Topics of Nature, Courage and Endurance. Her second collection, Life: Descending / Ascending, also published by TotalRecall Press, will be released October 2010. A third volume, quiet INSPIRATIONS, is available for pre-sale on her website at http://www.aliceshapiro.com/qi.html

Shapiro is also winner of the Bill C. Davis Drama Award for a verse tragedy which was produced in Poughkeepsie, NY and is currently having a traditional Shakuhachi musical score composed for it.

Additional Information

Shapiro has a grand interest in collaborations and producing unique poetry projects. "The Change Interviews" is an audio project of Pushcart nominated and winning poets that, in addition to being available on her website, is housed in the Axe Houghton Multimedia Archives at Poets House in NYC. She is currently working on producing AMERICAN POET - GA SPORTS, a TV reality show for poets competing for a book contract. Both projects are open to participants, the first for Pushcart poets, the second for poets of all experience and ages. Contact her through her website.
