At age seven I read a book titled DON QUIXOTE, written by Cervantes. I was so impressed that I decided to become a Knight-Errant and eventually, a Knight. I took a Knight's oath: "I SWEAR FEALITY TO MY GOD, MY COUNTRY, AND MY RIGHTOUS SOVERIGN. TO RESCUE MAIDENS IN DISTRESS; TO SLAY DRAGONS ANYWHERE; AND TO FAVOR THOSE IN NEED AND THOSE OPPRESSED EVERYWHERE."
This is the pledge I made and this is the pledge I have lived by. Over the past 67 years I have invoked this pledge in five wars and revolutions: WWII, Africa, China, Israel, and Iraqi Freedom. On my 66th patrol in Iraq with the 1st Stryker Brigade of the 25 Infantry division my vehicle was struck by a terrorist rocket severly wounding me. I was 82 Years old.
At 17, I fell 6,000 feet without a functioning parachute (I walked away.) In China I was arrested as a spy and stood before a firing squad (I escaped.) My plane was shot down behind the Iron Curtain (I walked away.) I studied Sabotage, Espionage, Counter Terrorism, Counter Insurgency, Guerilla warfare, and Paratroop tactics with the Chechoslovakian Special Forces and trained and commanded the First Israeli Airborne Brigade in their 1947 war. (I was 21 years old). I have served in the U.S. Merchant Marines, U.S. Airforce, and the Infantry, Paratroops, Cavalry, and Special Forcesof various nations. I have never deliberately killed anyone I wasn't aiming at!
