Stargazer, daydreamer, observer, writer of stuff. Mostly science fiction and sometimes mystery, suspense, thriller stuff. Short stories published here and there, also lots of articles. Moderate a group or two, teach writing now and then, edit a magazine, work on novel no. 3, sleep rarely, laugh often. Only slightly mad.

Background Information

I always loved to read and did so from an early age. I thought the people who could do this writing thing were magical. Then, when I was thirteen, a friend of mine showed me a story she'd written. I read the entire story and was captivated. It was good, but more than that, it had been written by someone I knew. I realized at that moment that I could be a writer. I've been one ever since.

I started out reading westerns. Every Zane Grey and Louis L'Amour I could find. Then I moved to Science Fiction and Fantasy, Tanith Lee, Phillip K. Dick, Greg Bear, James Tiptree Jr., I could list them all day. I also began reading thrillers, Lisa Gardner, John Sandford. Books are my greatest influence. I love that you can pick them up and put them down, think about them, return to them. Sometimes they change, or you change. Their authors may not still seem like magic to me, but the books themselves certainly are.

Accomplishments

My short fiction has been published in Alien Skin, Argus, Space and Time, Visions and has been read on OPB supported Golden Hours Radio. I'm the the former editor of the speculative fiction magazine, Nanobison and current editor of Together for Children, a publication of the Oregon Commission on Children and Families. I holds degrees in Communications and Psychology and I enjoy lecturing on writing at the community college.

Additional Information

I am currently working on book two in the epic fantasy series, Yetzirah: The Pocket Worlds. As my alter ego, PJ Cowan I'm also working on book two of the Ilaloona County thrillers. My indie support group, the Northwest Independent Writers Association (NIWA) will have a table at the upcoming Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Trade Show and at Orycon33, both in Portland, Oregon.
