Long ago, before Twittering and Blogging and Facebooking - in fact, way back in 1988 - I retired from the post I had held for ten years as a Schools Inspector in south London. Prior to that I had been a comprehensive school head (principal) for thirteen years and before that... well, that's back in the mists of time

Background Information

I come from a family of readers. In my home, reading was as natural as breathing. So, if you start as a reader, it's not surprising if you end up a writer,

Major influences, then, mother and father who never insisted that I read but who so often had their heads stuck in books.

School did not encourage my reading or writing. The English teacher, in our small grammar school, was hopeless and had been for many years before my arrival. When I reflect upon it now, it rather ... well,  after nearly seventy years, it still irritates me.

Birth Place
South Shields,  UK

I'm a graduate of the University of Durham (BA 1952) and MA (1959)

I am the author of twenty-odd non-fiction books, a collection of short stories and two novels.

'And Such Great Things as These' won an award for 'best novel' from the National Association of Writers' Groups. I wrote this using the pen name Allen Makepeace.

I was the winner of South East Arts Prose Prize and a runner-up for the Fenner Brockway Peace Prize

Additional Information

I still lecture to various groups: history societies, the Women's Institute, etc. My usual themes have been 18th/19th century crime; the origin and meaning of surnames; superstitions. I also give themed prose and poetry readings: Growing Up; Love, Lust and Marriage; A Christmas Anthology.

I am really WH Johnson but I try to hide these first names for which I hold my parents solely responsible. I am generally known as Johnnie.

My non-fiction includes books on disasters, the history of seaside entertainment, the supernatural and superstitions. I have also written extensively about crimes and criminals. I incorporated some of the material from my researches into the e-novel, 'Winter Hunt,'which I wrote under the name Allen Makepeace. My non-fiction e-book, A Virgin in the Philippines, has sold very well since publication last year.

Eighteen months ago, and quite out of the blue, I was emailed by Mrs Amanda Blundell who invited me to write her husbandís life story. He was, she told me, Ďa successful business man as well as a gangster greatly respected among criminals.í It seemed an invitation too good to turn down. I had not previously ghostwritten but this is how the Blundell book has turned out. I felt that I could not easily write an objective account of Eddie Blundellís activities in London and Essex and so the tale is told from his point of view. Eddie dictated his story onto tape and Amanda then forwarded the verbatim account to me. My role has been to shape his sometimes rambling story and to attempt to place it in its historical context. On occasion the language is very strong but I have tried to capture his voice register and this I hope adds authenticity to the telling. The book is marketed as 'Top-Drawer Villain' by Eddie Blundell. It is available though as well as sales@bertram. For those wishing for a copy signed by Eddie order from
