Background Information

On becoming an author:

In 1998 I was under the impression that my life would, from then on, be described as “life before Fibromyalgia” and “life after Fibromyalgia.” With a whole battery of symptoms, including whole-body muscle pain, neuropathy, lack of sleep, total and utter exhaustion, depression, lethargy, anxiety attacks, and countless other unmentionables, I was in no condition to believe my life would be anything other than these chronic symptoms from that day forward - forever. But thanks to my doctor, his open-mindedness and suggestions, and a bit of my own stubbornness, I took a different road.
When first diagnosed in 1998, I learned right away that prescriptions were not the answer for me. I was not willing to become subject to side-effects, or the steady raising of dosages, or the zombie-like quality of life. So with my doctor’s suggestion of two supplements, a website and a book, I began researching medical schools’ and institutions’ alternative and complementary divisions. I learned that natural help has little to no side-effects, and that I can use them for the rest of my life without worry. It also helped that I had not found a need to return to my doctor for Fibromyalgia symptoms since the year 2000. Therein lies my need to share this information, and the writing of my first book, Managing Fibromyalgia in 2008. My life then became, “life after becoming an author.”
My doctor was so impressed with this book, that he encouraged me to start a Fibromyalgia Support Group. I did. This allowed me to learn about Fibromyalgia from other perspectives, from the folks in my growing group. Then, as my doctor began sharing my book with his patients who had other conditions like MS, diabetes, lupus, lyme, arthritis and so on, I learned that the natural help that I was writing about helps all these other conditions too. But I should have realized that when my own arthritis seemed to be doing better. (Apparently I was more focused on the Fibromyalgia than the arthritis.) And more and more information was coming out about Fibromyalgia - new ideas about its cause and new methods of treatment - that my research was beginning anew. All this brought the realization that it was time to write another book. Thus, Fibromyalgia Basics: A Beginner’s Guide, was released by Tate Publishing in June 2011.
Fibromyalgia Basics lists and describes dozens of natural healing methods and treatments, so that others would understand that there are in fact, many alternative and/or complementary options to use with prescription medications (thereby using less or fewer of them) or even instead of prescriptions for the treatment of their multitude of symptoms.
Aside from natural treatments like acupuncture, chiropractic, massage, reflexology, Reiki, water therapy, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and more, I talk about the importance of God-given organic and whole foods and their antioxidant value, along with their nutritional value. The importance of supplements like Omega 3, magnesium, Vitamin D and others, as well as water and its pH value are described. I also share stress-relieving methods like deep breathing, meditation, prayer, visualization which are also important factors to help symptoms.
Fibromyalgia Basics is designed to provide a simple quick, natural approach so that a person can immediately start learning what to do to help manage their many symptoms of this complex syndrome. Natural treatments, proper nutrition, manageable movements, stress-relievers and more, help you form a lifestyle that enables you to return to the quality of life that you deserve. This has become my new lifestyle.

Research is ongoing and a third book is in the works, with a tentative title of How to Live Better With A Chronic Illness. In the meantime I am busy hosting my Fibromyalgia Support Group in Mishawaka, doing regular book signings, expos, and giving talks about Fibromyalgia all over the Michiana area, and other places as called upon.
