Article: Bonsall Author’s Book is About Being Grateful For the Things in Your Life
There is a saying about taking lemons that life gives you and making lemonade. Beverlee Gopp, formerly a mortgage banker for 20 years, whose place of employment closed its doors one day in 2007 without notice, knows all about that. This Bonsall resident, now a life coach, blogger and author, has self-published a book about how to find things to be grateful for from life’s worst moments and to turn them into life-affirming energy to help achieve your goals and dreams. Her book is entitled: Choose Gratitude Not Attitude Even When Sh*t Hits the Fan! After losing her job in 2007 and after months of sending out her resume, through interviews, depression and anger, Gopp developed her new career as a life coach (also sometimes called a motivational coach). She made this life change partially through journaling. “I had always journaled before, but it was basically ‘bitching’ about things. I turned it around to gratitude, and it changed my perspective. “We’ve all had bad things happen to us, and you have to decide: are you going to complain about it or take a lesson from it?” she says. She started to keep a blog about gratitude, and it became an important part of her life. One of the first things she did on her blog was to organize a campaign among readers to write letters to anonymous soldiers deployed overseas, telling the soldiers about their own days and what made them feel grateful. Her philosophy is not a religious philosophy, although she says it could be described as spiritual because she does follow the “law of attraction,” i.e. the principle that like attracts like and that thinking positively or negatively brings about either positive or negative results. The principle she pursues in her book is that being grateful—even for things that might not necessarily strike you initially as things that you ought to be grateful for—can bring positive results in your life. “The book is based on my own experiences. It is an interactive thirty-day journal. Each day I take ten reasons to be grateful. I then help the reader to find reasons to be grateful in his or her own life,” she says. The book came out on May 14 and Gopp’s family is very proud and excited for her. “I’ve coached my mom, spouse, kids and grandkids,” she says. The value of a life coach, she says, “is that a coach shows you what you don’t want to see and gives you a strategy to remove it. Like something that is limiting you. Or beliefs you develop in childhood that hold you back.” She coaches through the book by giving the reader questions to answer about herself or himself. Although you are supposed to read the book over a period of 30 days, Gopp finds that people often want to just go right through it. “They don’t want to put it down.” In one chapter, she talks about being grateful for “trespassing.” She likes to hike in the hills and valleys of Bonsall with her dogs. One day she was walking on someone’s property when the owner confronted her. She tried to establish a rapport with him, but the next week when she walked through the land, it was fenced. Instead of being sad for the fence, she focused on the happy times she had had on that property before that happened. There are many ways to apply this principle to your life. “If you have had an abusive parent, instead of focusing on the times that your mother hit you with a switch, you might instead remember instead that she stayed up all night sewing you a dress for a dance,” she suggests. She doesn’t like shooting, but her husband is a firearms enthusiast and likes to go shooting with his friends. So, instead of focusing on what she doesn’t like about it, she tries to enjoy it through the eyes of others. The two most important things to take away from her book, she says, are “gratitude” and “awareness.” “To get the gratitude, you have to be aware. For instance, be aware of language patterns that you employ. “Take ‘try’ and ‘can’t’ out of your vocabulary.” If you initially have a hard time finding ten things to be grateful for each day, she suggests to start by being grateful for breathing, or being grateful that the sky is blue. At the time she was writing the book, Gopp was fearful about her future. “After the mortgage bank closed, our debt mounted,” she recalls. Having that fear, in part, motivated her to learn how to motivate others. “Starting to recognize the gratitude in my life allowed me to release the fear and start something positive,” she recalls. Besides her life coaching, Mrs. Gopp also does a walking and talking program she calls “Walking in the Now.” This takes advantage of the fact that people are often willing to expose themselves and become truthful with themselves when they are surrounded by nature. They are able to answer questions such as “Why aren’t you able to accomplish what you want out of life?” she says. Her next book will probably be called Getting Gratitude From Senior Citizens. BONSALL – Bonsall resident Beverlee Harbour Gopp has announced that her book, "Choose Gratitude Not Attitude Even When Sh*t Hits the Fan," has been published and is now available in bookstores. Gopp said the book is a "pictorial and spiritual reminder" that recommends walking toward goals with honesty and intent while learning to focus on gratitude and being mindful of the words one uses. She said her journey toward gratitude started "after I lost my job in the mortgage industry. The company that I spent five years with closed their doors and my six-figure income disappeared. Soon, I had mounting credit card debt, nd had used all of my savings and retirement to pay the bills. I looked for work, sent out resumes and participated in countless interviews. I became depressed, angry, scared and lifeless." In conquering her challenges, Gopp moved on to become a motivational coach and says the book allows readers to get past the blame and negativity and navigate their way toward self-love, appreciation, contentment, and bliss.
