I am an Aviation Author, Historian and Magazine writer. My work concentrates on large "Heavy Lift" military and commercial transports, "Hybrid - Guppy" types and restored large "Amphibian" aircraft.

Background Information

Attended Southern Polytechnic State University - served in the United States Air Force as an aircraft mechanic, Crew Chief on C-124 Globemaster, flight mechanic on C-97 Stratocruiser and T-28 Trojan aircraft in the 1960s in both U.S. and England. Also worked in transient maintenance servicing many different military aircraft.

Retired from a career of 36 years with United Airlines where I acquired a broad working knowledge of the airline industry by working in flight operations, cargo operations and flight line aircraft handling. My experience in the Air Force and knowledge of aircraft has been key in researching and writing articles for numerous aviation magazines.

Having spent the majority of my career life at airfields around aircraft, I have experienced operations in every type of weather and witnessed many incidents and events. In addition I have photographed more than 10,000 aircraft.

Birth Place
Atlanta, GA

My current book THE ATL-98 CARVAIR is a comprehensive history of the fleet. It was published in 2008 by McFarland and Company. I have been informed it is the second most popular book in their aviation catalogue.

For more than 25 years my articles and photographs have appeared in Airways, Airliner World, WarBird Digest, Propliner, Airnieuws, Air Britain Aviation World, Journal of the American Aviation Historical Society, Flight Journal and many other aviation magazines.

I am a member of the American Aviation Historical Society and Air Britain. I serve as the Air Britain "Specialist" (Historian) on the DC-4/ATL-98 Carvair.

Additional Information

As a result of collecting data and photographs on the ATL-98 Carvair conversion of the DC-4 beginning around 1965, I have created one of the largest data bases and photo collections that exist on the type. This data base was essential in writing a comprehensive book on the DC-4/ATL-98 fleet. The book begins with corporate histories and profiles of key players, including William Patterson, Donald Douglas, Freddie Laker and Mike Keegan. Four chapters illustrate the evolution of the car-ferry as a viable aircraft, the history of Aviation Traders, engineering details incorporated into the Carvair’s production, and major Carvair operators. Chapters on each of the fleet’s 21 planes provide individual histories and unique anecdotal stories told by the crews, owners and operators that occured throughout the world. Seven appendices provide exhaustive facts, tables of data and the book is fully indexed. Currently I am researching and writing my next manuscript for McFarland Publishing. It is a comprehensive study of the Evolution of Guppy and Hybrid Large Volumetric aircraft. It includes the morphing of the C-74 into the C-124 and B-29 to C-97 to Super Guppy plus the history and engineering of other types supported by obsure anecdotal stories.
